Minister Praises 10-Yr-Old Award Winning Artists
Two 10-year-old students received well deserved praise from Minister of Education Dame Jennifer Smith after they bested more than 7,000 contestants in an international art competition held in Europe.
Earlier this year, Kinaé Dowling and Mi’kerah Moore – under the guidance of their teacher Dawn Fubler – entered their art work into the 14th International Art Exhibition for Children and Young People, in Hyvinkää, Finland.
Out of the 7,229 entries, from 69 countries, the two ten-year-old P6 students from West Pembroke Primary were singled out for their work. For their efforts, the students were awarded certificates, with one of the youngsters receiving a special achievement medal.
The 14th International Art Exhibition for Children and Young People opened on October 14, 2010. The theme of the exhibition was “My Home”, with all entries being judged by a jury of professional artists and art educators.
This past Friday (Dec 3), Kinaé, Mi’kerah, Ms. Fubler and school principal Opal Wilson attended the House of Assembly, where Minister of Education Dame Jennifer Smith publicly acknowledged them on the floor of the House.
Minister Smith said, “Earlier this year Ms. Fubler responded to an invitation to enter the works of several of the school’s art students in a competition at the Art Centre for Children and Young People in Hyvinkää, Finland.
“Bermuda was fortunate to have two of its public school students recognised out of the more than 7,000 works entered. What a wonderful achievement for the students, for West Pembroke Primary and for our public school system.
“As an artist myself, I am a firm believer that nurturing the talents of our students through arts and cultural activities, and allowing them to express their creativity through such mediums can only assist in developing youngsters who have a broader appreciation for their world around them. I applaud Kinaé and Mi’kerah for their accomplishments and I salute Ms. Fubler for demonstrating her commitment to their success.”
