AME Church Objects To New Liquor Licence

January 18, 2011

In Magistrates Court yesterday [Jan 17] Reverend Lanel Guyton, Pastor at St Paul’s AME Church on Court Street, was allowed to raise a late objection to the grant of a liquor licence to Mr George Swan who was representing “Intermezzo”, a food service operation that is seeking a wine and beer licence for a café planned to go into the new building on Court Street that is directly across from the new Court House and Government Offices building.

Mr Swan opposed the Reverend and St Paul’s being allowed to raise a late objection. However Chief Magistrate Warner, after considering the Liquor Licensing Act, ruled that he could and would allow the late objection but that the Church, for whom Rev Guyton was acting, might have to bear the legal costs if the action went against them.

Rev Guyton, making the primary case for St Paul’s AME church, said that the Church found that currently there were fifteen liquor selling operations within 300 yards of St Paul’s and that the addition of one more was not desirable. Rev Guyton also raised the matter of the proposed licensee operating so close to an established day-nursery for children.

The location of the proposed café would place it within 50 yards of St Paul’s AME church. The matter is set to be heard at a later date.

  1. SMH says:

I find this very ironic seeing as St. Pauls AME have individuals who sit up in bars getting DRUNK with the rest of us “sinners” and then turns around and preaches Sunday sermon! I have asked members of St Pauls about this individual in particular and the response was… As long as he has a degree in it he can preach… So sayin all this to say, why do u really care if an addition bar is being put up?! I am sure some members will appreciate it! And if that is what u are tryin to avoid then maybe u should start a change from within the church first an then worry about the surrounding public… A chain is only as strong as its weakest link, how can u change the community when ya chains links are broken?!

    • WWJD says:

It’s a shame, fellow Bermudians even considered responding to your ridiculous and cowardly comments. Come from behind your mask and name yourself, before speaking your mind. This issue is about the plight of a neglected community, and the people who are forgotten as a result.

The “back-of-town” has been dumped on long enough. You have Marsh folly which is a horticulture disaster, Belco spewing black soot over the roofs of persons homes with no compensation awarded for repairs; the total dissing of business owners on Court street…must I say anymore?

Please get educated on the matter before you speak! Please!!!

While you’re at it, look in the mirror, and tell us what do you see…

      SMH

It would seem to me, that SMH sounds like somebody thats been hurtin. wow, u harsh. Lol “All have sinned and fallen short.” Mercy!

  2. Truth is killin' me says:

Mr. Warner concluded by stating that “Intermezzo may only make available wine for sale only on Sundays during the Church’s opening hours.”

  3. Sarah says:

Businesses need all the help they can in order to stay in business right now, and no one goes to a restaurant that doesn’t serve alcohol. If the Church gets their way, the restaurant is sunk before it even opens, and those jobs are lost.

    • WWJD says:

      AMEN!

      • WWJD says:

Sarah, this is not a restaurant opening, but a mere store trying to make a buck or two, by selling cheap wine, to who? The same vagrants that loiter, defecate, urinate, litter, and break into properties looking for more change to buy more cheap wine.

        geeeeezzzz!

    • L says:

If you want a drink then go to a bar. There are plenty of people who go to a restaurant to eat and not drink.

  4. Cat says:

More community groups need to take the action that this church has. We need to be proactive and not encourage behaviours that are eroding our good health. We should be able to think of businesses other than bars and restaurants – and those jobs lost, well most likely they would not have gone to locals.

  5. Utterly disgusted! says:

Here we go again….another church puttin their noses in where it doesn’t belong. I don’t hear Intermezzo complaining that there will be too many HOLY and ALMIGHTY SUNDAY ONLY churchgoers congregating too close to their establishment because it looks bad for business!!! Give me a break! Can someone please find Reverend Lanel Guyton something to do. If he is the man of GOD that he claims to be, he should take a leisurely stroll into Intermezzos and invite the patrons of the business over for a private bible lesson or two. THOU SHALT NOT JUDGE!!

    • Concerned says:

Bermuda is a mess right now and more people need to get back into the word of God!! Yes I agree that St. Paul’s needs to worry more about getting younger members into the church than to worry about another bar. But the Church has to step up and speak because from what I read in the paper that island is not doing too well! There are more people in the bars than are in the church. And to the people that talk about the sinner sin the church please remember that a church is made up of members from the world so whatever is in the world you will find in the church!! Not every church member is a saint!! Do not judge all of God’s people because a few choose to be hypocrites!!! It’s about time that the chuch stood for something. The devil is working overtime all around the world!!

      • Hummmmm says:

did jesus not make water into wine????? you church people need to “READ” your bible.

        • Arthur - Atlanta says:

Yes Jesus turned water into wine…New wine and not the old intoxicating wine that the bible warns about. It talks about New wine which is good and it warns about Wine that is old, wine that moves amongst itself, wine that bites like a snake etc. etc. Maybe YOU should study (and not just read) the bible and you will see for yourself there is a difference.

          • Hummmmm says:

Do you eat KFC and crap like that according to science that more intoxiciating then the glass or two of wine of the poisoning of the body that the bable talks about. get real people. out of a hundred people you guys are worried or complaining about five out of that hundred. and as far as studying the bible. no thank you. it written by humans and i have a very hard time in a book where God loves but always talks about punishing you for not doing what it wants. sound like a control freek! aver all its one of the best books i read. its got sex, murder, and bit of syfi stuff in it. it wall make one hell of a three part movie.

            • TYU says:

              Hmmmmmmmmmmm,

The more you speak, the more your IQ level is revealed. You’re a sad case.

              • Hummmmm says:

The sad case is that these church uses “the bible’ when it benifits them.

                • U ON IT says:

No…your immaturity is the “sad case.” The bible is an historical account of human history, not a pie in the sky story filled with flowery accounts of life’s history. Life is, what it is…

                  Duuuuhhh!

              • Sure! says:

AMEN TYU! Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are truly a sad case, get a clue and most important, get a life, by the way, you were created by GOD, remeber that & ya the freak!!!!!

      • SMH says:

The church is made up of people of the world and no not every church member is a saint! So please don’t try and make it seem as though we think everyone in the church should be saints! We don’t, but I DO expect the one given me a sermon to be closer to a saint, rather than closer to a bar! Granted it isn’t a sin to drink, so one or two maybe ok but buying rounds of shots, intoxicating ones self to the point of foul language and behaviour is consider DRUNK which is a sin…

        • X Factor says:

          smh

You sound like a disgruntle member of that church…Lol!!!

          • X Factor says:

            SMH

By the way, if you knew they were sinning, why would you sit under the speaking. I would of walked out!!

            Makes you say Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!

    • White Jesus says:

I find it HILARIOUS that you finished your judgement with the famous phrase ‘thou shall not judge’. You people are always misappropriating that phrase and it’s time to stop. Are you saying that the establishment of a court sytem with JUDGES is somehow in contradiction to that statement??? No we cannot judge someones heart or soul, but damnit we must and WILL judge ACTIONS!!! The judgement of actions is beyond the scope of this phrase you idiots like to throw out everytime you disagree with the judgements people have made concerning your behaviour. ‘Thou shall not judge’ pft go tell the judge that fool and see the response lol”!!

  6. GREAT I HOPE THAY DO NOT GIVE IT TO THEM THANKS CHURCH!!!

    • Hummmmm says:

I give it to them and have two for one deals during church events and bible study. Another church trying to tell government what to do. Hey churches!!! The government is already messed up. They do not need your help!

      • TYU says:

        Hmmmmmmmmmmm,

IQ meter… 3 and declining fast!

        • Hummmmm says:

Tru. My hate for the church (not god) has nothing to with my IQ. All I am saying is that they need to step back. Correct me if I am wrong. Did Jesus hang with his 12 peeps and sinners? The going to court and trying to stop an issue he has nothing to do with should have been the last thing on the list. He should have walked 50 paces go into the café and show them the way. If memory serves me correct that’s what Jesus did. He showed the way. Then he got nailed to a tree.

          • Hummmmm says:

            stupid spell check!

            • X Factor says:

              Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Now, don’t get upset. Did you mean to say, “You should’ve used spell check.” lol, you need a tutor!

              • Hummmmm says:

WOW!!!!!! Its great to sea that you church ppl duck away from de reel truth when it is sad.

                Hows that for spelling!

  7. David Watson says:

When will churches realise they have no say in anything, nor should they. Remove religion and we will have a much more peaceful world with much less brainwashing and naivity.

  8. Annoyed says:

Disgusted you need to mind your own business. This is why Bermuda is in the mess it is now because of cowards like you!

  9. Michael Robinson says:

“No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequest ailments” 1 Timothy 5:23

“Go, eat your bread with enjoyment, and drink your wine with a merry heart” Ecclesiastes 9″7

“Thou dost cause the grass to grow for the cattle,
and plants for man to cultivate,
that he may bring forth food from the earth
and wine to gladden the heart of man” Psalm 104 14-15

  10. B Outerbridge says:

Why doesn’t the church just object to jobs? To employment? They work hard at it – no casinos which would have created thousands of jobs, now don’t want a new cafe to open, as a cafe without wine is not going to work. Would be nice if they could put some effort into actually helping people, rather than stopping new job creation.

  11. X factor says:

    Heeeeeheeee!!! U still can’t spell.
