Bermuda Race Weekend to Kick Off
Race fans of all ages will be out en masse when the Bermuda Marathon Weekend kicks off tomorrow [Jan 14]
From tomorrow through Sunday January 16, the 36th Annual Bermuda Marathon Weekend will host more than 620 race participants for a variety of events that include the KPMG Bermuda Invitational Mile, the Bermuda 10K and 10K Walk, the 2011 Bermuda Half Marathon, and the Bermuda Triangle Challenge.
According to race organizers, this year’s event has recorded the second highest number of overseas entrants since 2004. Entry levels in 2004 topped 890.
This year’s overall numbers, inclusive of local and overseas competitors, currently stands at just over 1,000. And organizers are hoping that the current Northeast winter storm doesn’t hamper the arrival of the international participants.
The Minster of Business Development and Tourism Patrice Minors said she is “thrilled” about the buzz surrounding the upcoming event and even more excited about welcoming an array of international participants to our shores for the annual race festivities.
Minister Minors who will be on hand for Friday’s activities said, “I’m absolutely thrilled to see the successful progression of this event. It’s truly grown in popularity and attendance in recent years and I want to commend the race organizers, who have managed to boost the participation numbers by more than 30 percent compared to last year. That is quite an accomplishment considering the challenging economic climate that we are currently in.”
Minister Minors continued, “We’ve billed this as an event that combines adventure with paradise and weather prevailing, I’m looking forward to welcoming some of the finest competitors from around the world to our majestic shores.”
Bermuda Marathon Weekend will also include special events such as the Health and Fitness Expo, which will take place at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess’s Harbourview Ballroom on Friday, January 14 and Saturday, January 15. The Health and Fitness Expo will showcase running supplies and equipment and feature open discussions with health and nutrition experts.
