Student Cooks Up New Idea For School Fees

January 19, 2011

potluck studentA college bound Bermuda student has taken an ingenious approach to finding tuition money in the current economic climate — she’s holding a pot luck lunch on January 28 to help raise fees for her education.

Christine Jones, 24, is currently a receptionist at the Ministry of National Security but she plans to start a graphic arts programme later this year.

“I have been accepted into Shillington College to study Media Arts in the April, 2011 Semester and although easy part is over (getting accepted), I still face the very difficult task of affording it,” she said. “I am having a pot luck to assist me with the cost of tuition. Between now and April 1 (which is when I leave for school) my goal is to raise $6000.”

“The cost of a meal is $10 and you have the option of having it delivered to you (in the Hamilton area) or picking it up from the Bermuda Public Services Union Hall. Even if you do not wish to purchase a meal, donations of any amount are welcomed and greatly appreciated.”

When asked how she came about this idea to help finance her education, Ms Jones said: “The idea of doing a pot luck came from the fact that everyone has to eat. I thought it would be better for me to provide a service (a cooked meal) to them rather me ask for straight cash. And some people enjoy it more when they do not have to cook it themselves and have it delivered to them.”

“I am very determined to make this happen and I have to think of different ways to get where I want to be,” said Ms Jones.

“Someone once told me ‘just go for it, don’t worry about the how and things will fall in place’. I have taken those words and used them, because there was a point in which I started to doubt whether I could achieve my goal of going to school, I was hung up on ‘how’ I was going to make it happen.”

“Now, I am putting myself out there and hoping, praying and wishing that it all comes together. With the help of the public, it can happen.”

The luncheon will be on Friday, January 28 from 12pm – 3pm. For further details on the luncheon call 516-8338 or email udevents@yahoo.com
