Video: Mz Malz ‘Can Do Bad All By Myself’
Just in time for the New Year, up-and-coming Bermudian performer Mz Malz released a new video of her song “I Can Do Bad All By Myself” as a present for her growing number of fans.
The 21-year-old sensation, whose love of poetry provided her with a springboard into music two years ago, cites Alicia Keys, Eve and Missy Elliot among her many musical influences.
Ms Malz [real name Stephanie Blyden] is becoming increasingly well known on the local entertainment circuit for her fusion of hard-driving but melodic R&B, rap and hip hop.
Named Best Female Rapper at the 2010 Bermuda Underground Music Awards held at the Ruth Seaton James Centre in July, Ms Malz — praised for producing music which is “upbeat and sure to get the club jumping” in a recent profile — aspires to be a producer as well as a performer.
The self-described workaholic said on her old website: “Initially I began writing poems at the age of seven, but soon after I found a greater passion when I began writing Rap and RnB songs. During my adolescence I continued to improve my skills, I spent alot of hours writing, recording and developing my rapping skills alone. I even began to produce my own songs on my home computer.”
“At the age of 18, I got the opportunity to record in a recording studio for the first time and I haven’t looked back since. As a female artist, I was really inspired by other artists such as; Missy Elliot and Eve, during her days with the Ruff Ryders. They gave me the confidence to believe that I can succeed in what many would have considered to be a male dominated industry at the time.”
Ms Malz and manager Trevor Bailey are maintaining a busy schedule for the Bermudian performer, booking gigs, releasing music and featuring her on the “Underground Radio Show” on Power 95.
