Members of the Coral Reefs Rifle and Pistol Club Association are preparing for two major events, the ISSF World Cup Rifle & Pistol event in Fort Benning in the USA and the Island Games on the Isle of Wight.
Most recently Ross Roberts, Sinclair Raynor, Carl Reid and Nelson Simons represented Bermuda at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India. 78-year-old Nelson Simons gave Bermuda the unique distinction of fielding the oldest athlete of the 7,000 plus athletes in India.
In addition, Ross Roberts won a Bronze medal while representing Bermuda at the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games.
The group is presently preparing to take on the World’s Best at the ISSF World Cup Rifle & Pistol event in Fort Benning in the USA. Following that event, members of the team will represent Bermuda at the Island Games on the Isle of Wight.
Competing in the 2011 ISSF World Cup provides athletes the opportunity to achieve Minimum Qualifying Scores (MQS) in all events for the 2012 Olympic Games. Olympic quota places will be awarded in all events according to the ISSF schedule.
The ranges are located on the military installation at Fort Benning, Georgia, approximately 150km south of the Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport. Sius Ascor electronic targets will be used for all elimination, qualification, and finals competitions. 7) targets are available for both 50 meters and 10 meter with 40 targets at 25 meters.
During the Isle of Wight Island Games the ‘Downend Long Range’ will be used for the 50m and 100yd Prone Rifle and 50m Free Pistol competitions. It has been extensively reshaped in 2008 and has 12 firing points. The short 25m range will be used for all the other Pistol Competitions. It has 10 firing points and 2 banks of 5 turning targets. Both ranges were used for the 1993 NatWest Island Games Target Shooting competitions on the Isle of Wight.
