Minister Hails E-Waste Day “Great Success”
Deputy Premier and Minister of Public Works, today heralded the Ministry’s first e-Waste day for 2011 as “a great success”.
On Saturday, March 12, 170 people attended the Tynes Bay Waste-to-Energy Facility to drop off their old electronic waste.
The waste filled one and a quarter containers with old electronics ranging from cell phones to photo copiers. These materials will be sent to a US EPA certified facility just outside of Philadelphia, PA where they will be shredded and prepared for recycling into new consumer goods.
Minister Burgess said: “I wish to thank the environmentally conscious members of the community who took the time and effort to bring in their e-Waste for recycling. It is very important to keep these items out of the waste stream as they contain toxic and recyclable materials that require disposal in the correct manner. I am also grateful to the Ministry’s Waste Management Section for its efforts in educating and encouraging Bermuda’s residents to dispose of their waste in an appropriate manner.”
In 2009/2010, the Waste Management Section sent 110 containers abroad for recycling, comprising 26 containers of air conditioners, 24 containers of vehicle batteries, 14 containers of tin, seven containers of aluminum, six containers of other metals, 16 containers of motor oil, two containers of fluorescent tubes, four containers of transformers, one container of household batteries and 10 containers of e-Waste.

I dropped an old computer to the recycling center. It was very organised and the W&E workers were very helpful.
