Women’s B League, Ravens B vs Canaries B, Final score: 2 – 1
Ravens’ Tracy Stewart opened the scoring in the 3rd minute from a field goal and that half ended 1 – 0.
The lead was doubled in the 42nd minute of the second half from a field goal by Carolyn Soares. Canaries’ Pip Jones touched the net in the final minute of the game with a field goal and the final result was 2 – 1 for Ravens.
Swifts B vs Cardinals B, Final score: 2 – 3
The ‘B’ League champions Swifts lost their first game ever to the Cardinals and paid the penalty for not converting their chances in the first half. In the first 19 minutes 5 shots and one penalty corner went wide of goal or were saved by the Cardinals’ ‘keeper’ Holly Augustus. Cardinals played with 10 men at first and then with a full side of 11 twelve minutes into the first half. Swifts did open the scoring in the 20th minute when Ryanne Bardgett converted from the top right of the circle with a powerful strike and that half ended 1 – 0 to Swifts. Swifts wasted a penalty corner at the beginning of the second half and Cardinals then made Swifts pay for that error as they came from behind with a text book play starting from ‘sweeper’ Wendy Cassidy to midfielders Helen Marshall and Candy Foggo who slipped it to Adrien Lewis who passed it to Zaynab Brown who then crossed it to Denise Downey in the ‘D’ who timed it perfectly and slammed it into the back of the goal in the 47th minute which caught Swifts completely off guard. The score was now 1 – 1. Cardinals’ second goal came from a penalty corner shot in the 56th minute pushed out by Downey to the top of the circle to Foggo who slipped it to Marshall who struck it to the far left corner post and was swept in by Katie Flath and the score was now 2 – 1 to Cardinals. Another text book play by Cardinals in the 61st minute to find Marshall cruising pass the Swifts and striking the ball into the circle and into the path of Downey who struck it high over ‘keeper’ LeMaire’s head for goal number three.
Swifts continued to fight back and Bardgett scored her 30 B league goal of the season in the 68th minute, but it was too little too late to tie the game and Cardinals were the victors of 3 – 2 to a cheering crowd on the concourse.
Bluebirds B vs Longtail Canaries B, Final score: 5 – 0
The last game of the season saw Bluebirds put on a classic hockey display with goal scoring right off of their coach, Helen Trussell’s play sheet. The first goal came in the 3rd minute from a Deborah Sagur’s cross from the left hand side which found centre forward, Laura ‘Sybil’ Bardgett in front of the goal ready to pop the ball into the net. Later on, Bardgett picked up the ball at the top of the circle and hit the ball firmly over to the right hand post where Kourtney Fassler was waiting to steer the ball into the goal to score in the 30th minute and the first half ended 3 – 0 to Bluebirds.
In the second half, Fassler struck again when the ball was taken down the right hand side of the field to the back line by Fiona Lloyd who passed it back to Fassler who hit the ball through Longtail Canaries’ ‘keeper’ Jokiah Richardson’s legs to score her second field goal in the 34th minute. With Bluebirds moving the ball around the pitch more freely and were rewarded when a cross from Fassler found Bardgett at the top of the circle who smashed home her second goal in the 46th minute into the far side of the goal away from the ‘keeper’ Richardson. The final goal of the game came from a penalty corner when Bardgett’s initial strike at goal was deflected from the ‘keepers’ pads, collected by Maria ‘Mazz’ Harris who pushed the ball back towards the goal which was collected by Captain Kris Soares who scored the final goal of the season in the 66th minute on her birthday.
Both teams also had goals disallowed and although Longtails Canaries didn’t get on the score sheet, they played a competitive, aggressive game and are noted for their continued efforts.
Women’s A League, Wildcats A vs Ravens A, Final score: 0 – 4
This was a night game, and play started with both teams attacking and defending well but neither could find the back of the net and the first half ending in a scoreless draw of 0 – 0.
Four minutes into the second half Ravens’ Megan Troake executed a shot from a penalty corner to put them in front. Ten minutes later Ravens would score again off a field goal from Megan Leitch and in the 52nd minute another field goal by Sharmini Samuels to round out the victory in the 66th minute to Ravens of 4 – 0 from a field goal by Georgia Harris.
Canaries A vs Budgies A, Final score: 4 – 2
Budgies tried to move the ball away from their goal, but Canaries’ Lisa Marshall scored a field goal in the 7th minute and the first half ended 1 – 0 to Canaries. Four minutes into the second half, Canaries were given a highly contested penalty stroke which was converted by Marshall who just brushed past Budgies’ ‘keeper’ Candace DeSilva; despite Budgies hard fought efforts throughout the half they couldn’t find the net.
Canaries scored their third goal in the 50th minute from a penalty corner struck home by Elizabeth Duncan to advance the score of 3 – 0. Four minutes later Marshall completed her hat-trick from a field goal. Budgies kept fighting and got on the scoresheet in the 62nd minute when Erica Furtado scored from a penalty corner assisted by Keishae Robinson, and three minutes later Budgies’ Jaselle Smith scored a field goal to make the final score of 4 – 2.
Swallows A vs Swifts A, Final score: 5 – 0
With 6 players missing, Swifts utilized three 13 year olds, Taj Branch in goal, Asha Trott at right defender and Azari Thomas at right midfield throughout the match. Swallows Jennifer Chisnall gave them the lead in the 11th minute off a penalty corner, and Maria Dobinson doubled the lead in the 16th minute from a field goal. Elizabeth Stewart advanced the lead in the 26th minute from a penalty corner and the first half ended 3 – 0 to Swallows.
With Swifts back to 11 players at the beginning of the second half, after a 6 minute suspension for Kelah Osborne and a 23 minute suspension for Captain Ryanne Bardgett, Swallows found it harder to convert their chances. Eventually, after Swifts were down to 10 players, Swallows added an open play goal in the 58th minute when Lisa LeBlanc scored a magnificent goal, which was assisted by Hannah Ellison, and the final goal of the game came in the 64th minute when Stewart converted her second penalty corner and the result being 5 – 0 to Swallows.
Excellent defending by Mallory Towlson, Kelli Nusum, and newcomer Danielle Harker.
