Bermudian Sailor Helps Tabor Academy Win
The Tabor Academy Seawolves continued their 2011 unbeaten team racing record by defeating St Georges School 4 -1 on Wednesday. This win took the Tabor Varsity Sailing team to a 9 – 0 record so far for the season.
Skippering all five races in rainy conditions were team Captain Nick Johnstone and Bermudian sophomore Mackenize Cooper while skippers Alex Jacob and Sean Golden rotated the helm of the 3rd boat. Winning crew for the day included Connor Murphy, Doyle Calhoun, Asa Smith and Emily Olson.
This win was significant as St Georges School is not only a primary rival but also one of the top New England Secondary School Association (NESSA) teams. St. George’s School skippers for this regatta were Max Simmons, Pearson Potts and Evan Read, all former top North American Opti sailors. NESSA’s region is highly regarded as one of the toughest divisions in US scholastic sailing.
The Tabor Seawolves are now preparing for this weekend’s NESSA fleet race championships for the O’Day trophy. There are 5 regional qualifiers on Saturday throughout New England while the top finishing schools will be invited to the Championship finals which are scheduled to be held at Tabor Academy on Sunday. The NESSA Champions will earn an invitation to the scholastic sailing fleet racing National Championships for the Mallory Trophy which will be sailed in Texas in May.
