Premier To Attend Royal Wedding In London

April 24, 2011

Kate-William1_370x278This evening [Apr.24] the Premier confirmed that she will attend the upcoming royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, which will take place at Westminster Abbey in London on April 29.

The Premier said, “I am pleased that Bermuda was recognised, provided with an invitation and is being represented on this occasion. Clearly this will be a wedding with a difference- It has the wow factor.”

“As a woman you feel a kinship with the idea that love has trumped the odds despite the differences in background. Many of us as women can empathise with the love story. This is certainly one of my less arduous duties.”

The night before the wedding the Premier will attend a dinner hosted by the Secretary of State of Foreign Affairs and Mrs. Hague. The couple will also host a post-wedding reception at Lancaster House.

Premier Paula Cox and husband Germain Nkeuleu were among the 1,900 guests who have been invited to the service at Westminster Abbey.

The news of their invitation yesterday prompted over 100 comments, both on our article as well as the Facebook post. Many locals were supportive of the Premier attending – feeling that it would be rude to say no, and that she should attend as a representative of Bermuda, while others felt she should decline the offer for financial reasons.

Celebrity guests at the royal nuptials will include soccer star David Beckham and his wife Victoria, musician Elton John, film director Guy Ritchie, “Mr Bean” actor Rowan Atkinson and Australian Olympic swimmer Ian Thorpe.

Other invited guests include UK Prime Minister David Cameron, British soldiers who fought in Afghanistan, people who work for Prince William’s charities, and friends and family of the couple.

In addition, royalty from numerous countries including Denmark, Norway, Spain, Thailand and Morocco will be in attendance, along with political leaders and dignitaries from the 54-member Commonwealth of nations made up of former British territories. US President Barack Obama is amongst those who were not invited.

The Daily Mail reports that there has some been some controversy as former Labour Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, were not invited while their Conservative predecessors, Sir John Major and Baroness Margaret Thatcher have been invited.

The Royal Family has set up a multitude of online avenues in which to follow the wedding; it will be live streamed on The Royal Channel on YouTube and accompanied by a live multi-media blog, an integrated Twitter feed with the hashtag #rw2011, a Flickr photostream, hourly updates on their Facebook page and more. An estimated two billion people are expected to watch the Royal Wedding.

Prince William, who is second in the line of succession to Queen Elizabeth II, first met Ms Middleton in 2001, while they were both studying at the University of St Andrews.

In Bermuda, Project Action will be holding a Bermuda Reception “High Tea” in celebration of the wedding between HRH Prince William of Wales and Kate Middleton. This fund-raising event will take place in the Harbour Room, Fairmont Hamilton Princess on Friday, 29 April, 2011 at 3pm. The taped wedding will be seen on large screens.

I have nothing to say on this matter. Once some others reply, I will comment. Don’t want to be the first.

  3. W.T.F.??? says:

Hope she pays for this trip and everything included on her OWN Dollar and NOT OURS!

  4. Not what the instruction book says:

I bet EB is pissed. He woud have gone wiff 50 body guards an Vanda Vouldn’t v curtsied.

  5. Former Insider says:

Great another trip to reset the dial, only 1 business class flight on the taxpayer, or maybe 2 as it is a state visit:

    1) British Airways $8,600 (for 2 Club World Tickets)
    2) Possible Lackies in toe $4,300 per person
    3) Hotel at $750 per night
    4) Per Diem allowance to spend $200+ per day
    5) Limo at Gatwick, our Premier shouldmnot travel by train to Victoria, nor take a black cab
    6) security detail after the recent package delivered to cabinet

Total = $10,000 to $35,000 depending on how much of entourage goes with Premier and The First Gentleman.

    STARDOM!

    • W.T.F.??? says:

you can bump that up much more…the limo will be on call 24/7.

$200 a day??? wont get much.make it more like $500.

Hotel @$750 a night?? make it pounds and not $’s.

      • Truth says:

I don’t understand how Terry can respond first on almost all of the stories.

  6. HOW Weird? says:

Funny…. Seeing as she represents a political party that last year wanted nothing to do with being part of Britain… Just another waste of tax payers money.

    • W.T.F.??? says:

      HOW Weird is right…
the Patronizing Losers Party have seen how the tide is turning against them and now they think that they can fool the Bermudian public by pretending to be for the Motherland!

  7. IDIOTS says:

Not to worry guys…it won’t be tax payers money for this trip…they will dip into the MILLIONS they got from America for allowing the uighurs to come live in Bermuda

  8. George Courtney says:

bermuda was asked to be represented by its london office which it agreed to so why should be paying more money for more representation???? HELLO!!!!

    • J Starling says:

I wonder if any journalists will follow-up on what you say George. It would be interesting to hear the responses…

  9. James S says:

Interesting that she will go there but we don’t get a public holiday as Britain and Cayman Islands do.

    • The 411 says:

No holiday. We have enough holidays. Cayman does not have the degree of financial commerce we have going on. They can afford a holiday. We can’t. Particularly to supposedly watch a wedding that 90% of Bermudians don’t care about.

  10. Apocalypto says:

Do you think she will take Burch LOL

    • tradition says:

Too bad you are at a loss for words. I wish Ms. Cox ghas a blast on OUR behalf. Furthermore she does have a husband who is our First Gentleman. Show some repect.

      • D. Everett says:

@Tradition,, thank you at least someone has some sense and resapect.

        • tradition says:

you are welcomed. I may not agree with all that Ms. Cox does but she is our leader.

I often question, When will Bermudians aquire some national pride. We support eveyone/thing else but not our own.

  11. Amazed says:

I think is is such a great thing for our premier to attend, both for her and us, but I do hope that she has been keeping track of the huge amount of moneys being spent on government travel and the state of our economy.
I hope she will make the most generous gesture and pay her own way. I would.

  12. Upset says:

James S I agree. Don’t you know that other British colonies are off also with Cayman? Why is Bermuda not taking off, we are a British Colony. We all want to see this great event, but instead we have to work as usual and here about it.

    • tradition says:

And I guess you would expect to get paid. Let us look at the economy. That one day may be the determining factor for all of us; furthermore, 24th of May is just around the coner. HOW MANY HOLIDAYS DO WE NEED? Go to work. Grin n Bear it.

  13. mal says:

maybe if the royal family really knew how badly bermuda treats its british citizens that try and make a life in bermuda the invite would never have been sent why on earth we are asking a country that is so blantantly discrimitive towards expats to attend such a great event i have no idea!!!!! what a waste of two invites but at least its not the browns representing now that would be a tragedy i guess paula cox is the best of a bad choice
