“Proud To be Bermudian” Launch Tonight

April 20, 2011

1bermuda_flag_stockThis evening [Apr.20] will see the launch of a new music video that has been specifically designed to revive and re-instill a sense of pride in being Bermudian and is aimed at bringing all Bermudians together.

“Proud To be Bermudian” has been produced by The BERMUDIANS in association with Just Platinum Recording Studios over the last 18 months. The video features a wide variety of local talent singing a song specially written and directed by John C. Woolridge, all set against the background of Bermuda’s incredible scenery.

The song may well become the new Bermuda song as it turns up the volume on unity. The lyrics of the song encourage all to “come along with me, let’s stand together…a brighter destiny will dawn for us as we blend our hopes and dreams and live in peace as one.”

Said The BERMUDIANS leaders, Janice Battersbee and Erica Rance-Cariah, “Our goal with the music video project was to reach Bermudians of all ages and all walks of life with a powerful message of unity and respect for one another. To be able to say, ‘I’m proud to be a Bermudian’.”

They continued, “Bermudians have always been known as friendly and courteous to all, which has always been our hallmark. Now is the time for the people of Bermuda to re-evaluate and comprehend a new level of unity and respect that we should enjoy within our community. Now is the time to unite – to move forward together as one. We must focus on our commonalities rather than our differences. We must focus on climbing the ladder of success together. We must build a solid relationship of trust as brothers and sisters, connected by a common goal for our and our children’s future in our small and beautiful Island home”

The music video and song will be unveiled at an invitation only gala screening at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess and a DVD/CD package will be available for general sale later this month at All Wrapped Up in the Washington Mall, Caesar’s Pharmacy in Somerset, Lindos Group of Companies, T&L Warehouse in Spanish Point and other locations island wide.

Production of the DVD/CD package was enabled by the generous sponsorship of Lindo’s, The Complete Office, Butterfield & Vallis and the ACE Group and supporting sponsors, AAC Saatchi & Saatchi, Bermuda Blueprinting, the Freisenbruch-Meyer Group, BF&M and Cosmic.

The packages will be priced at $10 with proceeds being used to benefit Bermuda’s Public Schools.

I hope all bermudians embrace this video…all races, socio-economic backgrounds, all political parties, etc…one thing we all have in common is that we are Bermudians and we need to be proud of US!

  2. sandgrownan says:

Proud of what? What have we contributed to mankind? What have we achieved? What have we done to our island home in the last 10 years.

I’m all for unity, but we need to lose the “Bermujans are spashal” mentality and get real.

    • itwasn'tme says:

LOL grumpy old man you are! But really, what is a Bermudian? There is no such thing because there is no such nation. I’VE ALWAYS prefered to be called by my true title on paper and verbally

      “BRITISH OVERSEAS TERRITORY CITIZEN”

      • Terry says:

Always knew you were a “BOTC”…….bwahaaaaaaaaaa

    • Ashlee Battersbee says:

How about we make a fresh start with being proud of this beautiful production and let that lead to people once again feeling proud to be Bermudian and feeling “spashal” and unique again. We very well may have lost sight of why we should be proud and what makes us so special over the years, but now that there is a hands down AMAZING way for people to come together and realize what it means to be Bermudian again, why is there such negativity? Let’s not dwell on what HASN’T been done…let’s focus on what is BEING done and maybe get some initiative to do something ourselves, within our own communities…

    • U dont need to know my name says:

      your not Bermudian are you?
if u are not please keep your negative comments to yourself sir.
I AM PROUD TO BE A BERMUDIAN IN BERMUDA BERMY 24 7 365

    • Organic Bermudian says:

You need to get real and have the heart transplant that you have been needing If you have nothing good to say Sh.. UP!!!

  3. Terry says:

  4. erica rance-cariah says:

Sorry that some people really have nothing positive to contribute to anything these days…must be very lonely people…

but on a positive note Tune in to the VSB evening news tonight as Mr Darby is showing a portion of the song for everyone to see.

    • sandgrownan says:

Don’t misinterpret – respect (not raspact) for ones fellow islanders is important, as is unity.

however, Bermudian holier than though, self righteous head up one’s own backside atttitude needs to stop.

  5. Linda Mello says:

Disappointed in some of the negative comments. I saw parts of the video on TV11 News tonight and found it absolutely delightful. I think it is just what Bermuda needs right now. It should be played in every school assembly hall before classes start. We need to feel proud to be a Bermudian. This video reminded me that we do have a hell of a lot to be proud of. Unlike some, I don’t need a flag to feel Bermudian. I don’t consider myself anything but a Bermudian. To all who contributed to the making of this video….bravo, I nominate it as our national song. I love it.

  6. sigh says:

I must say that i have to disagree with Ms Battersbee comments on the news. She said that she doesnt hear people say they are proud to be Bermudian anymore. I am always around people who are proud to be Bermudian. being proud to be Bermudian doesnt depend on who is in power, whether there is crime or not, whether you are rich or poor, black or white, and it isnt based on a moment or moment(s) in time…it is a feeling and an awareness that one has.
I have always been Proud to Be Bermudian…through thick and thin, good or bad…i love my country!

    • erica rance-cariah says:

Dear Sigh…that was not Janice’s only comment but the interview was edited to allow as much of the song to be seen as possible. There are MANY of us saying that we are proud but there are more than us not saying it or even feeling it.

We hope that the song will reignite the pride that many of us feel. We owe it to the next generation to pass the pride on to them…many of the youth struggle as they hear the negative so often…my sons included. Now they walk around the house singing the song.

  7. Of a truth says:

Saw the video at my school today and it was WELL received! Teachers and students could not stop talking about it and singing the song. There were even teachers who became joyfully emotional at seeing it. I can’t help but echo the comments I’ve been hearing all day, this video was so well needed and so fitting right before the holiday (for those that have seen the video you’ll know what I mean). The level of quality and excellence in the song AND video was unlike anything I’ve ever seen in Bermuda. Thanks to those who put this together and I am so glad this will go to benefit our public schools!

  8. Ryan Whiting says:

Will extend my (albeit late) support for the song! I recently bought the DVD and, really, the video is excellent. Great message and fantastic talent!

  9. foxybeige says:

I LOVE this song/DVD! It is on REPEAT in my CD player!! I cried the first time I heard the song and now I sing it every day. Just visited Bermuda for the first time ever last week even though my grandfather was Bermudian (RIP pops). Going to Bermuda was like connecting to a piece of myself and seeing the video made me extremely proud to share that heritage and culture that my grandfather would bring to the states with him when he came to visit. Shouts out the the Richardsons, Stovells, Lincolns and Bowens . . . proud to be your family! Waving the Bermy flag here in the US! Good job Bermuda! ~Percy Richardson’s granddaughter

    • Janice Battersbee says:

So glad you enjoyed it and SO glad you were able to connect with your Bermuda roots!! That’s what this project is all about- bringing us all together to appreciate who we are! Blessings!!
