‘Shed Your Tears and Walk Away’ to Screen

April 12, 2011

Bermuda-born director Jez Lewis will return to the Island for the first time since his early childhood when his award-winning documentary film makes its international premiere at the fourth Bermuda Documentary Film Festival [Bermuda Docs], April 29-30-1 May.

‘Shed Your Tears and Walk Away’ earned rave reviews from the United Kingdom press, and was named Best UK First Feature at the East End Film Festival in London. It will screen on Saturday April 30 at 4.15 p.m. in the Tradewinds Auditorium of the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute.

Mr Lewis, who left Bermuda with his family at the age of two, grew up in the town of Hebden Bridge, Yorkshire. He moved away to London, but kept getting called back home for the funerals of former classmates. Determined to find out why his friends continued to die at their own hands, he set off on a personal journey of discovery – and has made a deeply moving film about drug and drink addiction amidst bucolic surroundings.

“I am really thrilled to be returning to Bermuda, the place of my birth, which I left too young to remember more than 40 years ago,” Mr Lewis says. “I have always wanted to visit, and to do so with my film Shed Your Tears And Walk Away being shown at Bermuda Docs is all the more special. I’m looking forward to both my visit and the film festival immensely.”

Festival director Duncan Hall expects the film to hit home with Bermuda audiences. “The film is about trouble in paradise – and so the parallels between Hebden Bridge and Bermuda are there for us all to see,” he said. “The film is told with exceptional warmth, humanity and humour – and is also a film about the power of friendship. The film received rave reviews from the major media outlets in the UK, and I am delighted to bring both Jez, and the film, to Bermuda Docs.”

The full festival line-up will be announced on Friday April 15. Tickets for the April 29-30-1 May festival, $15, go on sale Friday April 15 at www.bdatix.bm, at All Wrapped Up Home in Washington Mall, at the Money Shop, Dundonald Street, and at Fabulous Fashions, Heron Bay Plaza, Southampton.
