Two Local Golfers To Play in Pro-Am
For the first time in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf’s quarter-century history, local golfers will have the opportunity to qualify to play alongside a major champion in the 2011 PGA Grand Slam Pro-Am.
The PGA of America and Port Royal Golf Course are making two Pro-Am Tournament spots available for this purpose in an island-wide qualifying event known as “Quest for the Best”.
The PGA’s Senior Director of Championships David Charles said: “We look forward to this new Pro-Am Qualifier bringing the Bermuda golfing community together and build on the great success and excitement we have felt on the island for the past four years.”
Every golf club in Bermuda has been offered the opportunity to host a qualifying event at its course. Golfers will play as two-person teams in a better ball net competition. The top seven teams will receive an entry into the finals at Port Royal Golf Course on September 17, 2011. The winning team at Port Royal on September 17 will be awarded spots in the Pro-Am as well as entry into exclusive events the week of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, including Clubhouse Hospitality, the Sunday Welcome Reception and the Tuesday Champions’ Celebration.
Port Royal Golf Course is the home of the 2011 and 2012 PGA Grand Slam of Golf. Port Royal was described by late architect Robert Trent Jones Sr., as his finest design outside the United States. A public course that opened for play in 1970, Port Royal underwent a $13.7 million renovation completed in 2009, extending the par-71 layout to 6,842 yards.
The fee to enter is $250 per player, which includes golf in each of the rounds the player qualifies, day passes to each day of the 2011 Grand Slam and lunch at Port Royal on September 17 (regardless of whether the player has qualified for the final).
A spot in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf Pro-Am is valued at $15,000 and often includes a collection of coveted rewards. Last year’s Pro-Am participants received iPads, Cleveland wedges, and Pro V1 golf balls. However, playing golf with a Major Champion is considered the most coveted reward of the day.
To-A-Tee Bermuda and the Port Royal Golf Course will manage the Quest for the Best under the guidance of the PGA of America. This event is part of a coordinated, multifaceted effort to generate buzz for the 2011 PGA Grand Slam in the lead-up to the fall season event, October 17 – 19.
