Bermuda College graduates were encouraged yesterday [May 19] to go out into the world and shape it into one they want to live in by the institution’s president Dr. Duranda Greene.

Over a hundred students took part in the College’s commencement ceremony — with more than a third of the Class of 2011 graduating with honours.

Students will be heading to overseas schools including Brock University, Howard University, Dalhousie University, University of Kent, University of the West Indies, University of London, Spellman College

Three of the graduating students are international, and travelled to Bermuda to attend the College

The commencement speaker was Universal Electric director and Brilliant Solutions founder Craig Laws who attended Bermuda College in the 1990s. An electrical contractor, he now sits on the College’s apprenticeship and training board.

Bermuda College president Dr. Duranda Greene said, “As you prepare to leave Bermuda College remember your education is not just about you. Your knowledge, your skills and your great creativity have the potential to benefit the lives of everyone around you.”

“The next generation will grow up in the world that you shape, and lead in the years to come. Make it a world you will be proud of, make it a world that they will want to live in. You are leaving us with your degree, diploma or certificate in hand ready to embark on the next phase of your success story. Whatever you do, give it your all and do it with integrity.”

Dr. Greene added, “This is the first class that will be graduated under the College’s new accreditation status. It doesn’t make this year’s graduates any more successful than our previous graduates, but it does facilitate our students’ success as they transition to that next step of their journey to overseas institutions, or if they begin or continue career dreams locally or abroad.”
