Tourist Fined $2,000 For Importing Marijuana
The day after a female tourist was jailed for 30 days for importing marijuana, another female tourist appeared in court also charged with importing marijuana.
In Magistrates Court this morning [May 26] 53-year-old American tourist Teresa Sheridan pleaded guilty to importing an illegal drug into Bermuda.
She had arrived at LF Wade International at 2:10pm on Monday 23rd May on a scheduled flight from New York. After clearing Immigration, she had been pointed out by the Police K-9 unit as a person. She was then subjected to a secondary Customs search.
Asked if she was carrying drugs, she replied yes, and told search personnel that she was carrying drugs “between my legs”.
By 4:46pm, Customs and Police searches had been completed and she was found to have illegal drugs in two Ziploc bags that she had been carrying between her legs along with other material found in her handbag.
The Ziploc bags had also contained another substance which, Crown Prosecutor Robert Welling said, were sometimes used to try and mask the smell of cannabis.
The total weight of cannabis found was 3.0 grams, whereas the tourist yesterday was found in possession of 10 times that amount.
Duty Counsel Marc Daniels, speaking on Ms Sheridan’s behalf, said that she uses cannabis as a treatment for her depression and that she was scheduled to leave Bermuda today. He asked that the Magistrate consider her ready admission at the airport, her guilty plea now, and the small amount involved.
Magistrate Archie Warner asked Duty Counsel Marc Daniels: “She felt the love?”
Fining her $2,000 or twenty days in prison, the Magistrate said that the fine must be paid forthwith failing which she would “feel the love and stay with us for twenty days.”

Yesterday, the 59 year old woman was fined $3000 and handed a 30 day sentence for weed that she had a valid prescription for (not saying it makes it okay for her to import it in Bda) but today this woman is only fined $2000 for sneaking weed in between her legs…WTF?!?! I understand the quantities are different but come on now…shouldn’t she also have been given a 30 day sentence along with the fine for the fact that she had no valid reason to carry it and blatantly tried to sneak it into Bda? Where’s the consistency?!!
True dat…
I agree with you. While reading the article I was thinking the exact same thing to myself. The fact that she tried to smuggle it into the island should hold a jail term. smh
perscription is valid in the country issued. NOT HERE
I understand that, however is it “valid” to smuggle weed in ziploc bags between your legs? NO! But she didn’t get jail time!
My point was if you’re going to hand one woman a jail sentence for illegally importing drugs into the island, then the same should be done to the next woman doing the exact same thing!!
the women yesterday had more then a oz. of weed and 12 spliffs. This person only warrented a fine “or” days in jail because of the amount, IMO.
Not really the point they were making..lack of consistency in the sentencing appears to be the issue…I swear it’s whatever side of the bed the Magistrate wakes up in the morning….
@ Concerned: um feeling you on that!! The system Makes No Senses!!
There’s irony in that comment ‘Wonder says’……………..

Where is the equal rights and justice in Bermuda’s court system . Bermuda’s policies and laws is what is pulling us down .
That doesn’t give people the right not to follow the law though.
Agree or disagree we all have to follow all the rules. If we were the pick and choose which laws we follow there would be anarchy!
……….PHHHHHHHHHHH…………tax it………………..Phhhhhhhhhh!
Is she a flower girl from the sixties ?
These last few people have been old enough to know better ..Didn’t they learn anything when they watched the movie ‘Midnight Express’ ?
It should have/did strike a fear into the hearts of a generation of Americans.
Archie needs to be fired and sent back home!
Is it illegal to talk on your cell phone while driving? Is it illegal to not have a small child in a car seat? EVERY day I see people yacking on their cell phones while driving, sometimes even while their small child stands up in the front seat. How could you let your small child stand up in the car? All it takes is a need to slam on brakes and child’s hitting the windshield. IMO these things are 100% more dangerous than weed, but yet why are the police not enforcing life saving laws? The priorities are backwards. I know the law is the law and I can respect that, but I have to ask why are only some laws important while others severely neglected?
It’s the UBP’s fault……….. a leftover from de olden dayz…..U Byes Patrol…..
Ban them after all it’s making people criminals ban’em…………
LOL Bermuda Government answer to crime “ban it all” …
