Video: 2011 Spelldown Contestants Introduced

Two weeks ago some of the best young students from across the island gathered at the Ruth Seaton James Auditorium for the final round in the 2011 Spelldown Competition.

The finals were held on April 23 after three preliminary zone contests were held. The West Zone contest was on April 12 at Dalton E. Tucker Primary school in Southampton, the Central Zone-down was on April 13 at Mount St. Agnes in Pembroke, and the East Zone contest was on April 13 at Elliot Primary School in Smith’s.

In the video below the nine finalists are introduced, with a brief bio of each student; Mackenzie Paul of Somersfield Academy, Sean Adderly of West Pembroke Primary, Ezra Joell of West End Primary, Caelin Peters of Mount St Agnes, Brendan Jones of Warwick Academy, Jewell Cumberbatch of East End Primary, Prithimkkraa Balasubramaniam of Port Royal, Kyle Matthews of Gilbert Institute and of course the eventual winner Nasir Simmons of St George’s Prep.

10-year-old Nasir Simmons claimed the top spot, winning the grand prize of a family trip to Washington DC. The St George’s Prep student also earned a special certificate of honour from the Town of St George’s, presented by Mayor Kenneth Bascome.
