Bermuda Win Three More Medals

Bermuda’s overall medal count at the 2011 Island Games being held in the Isle of Wight is now up to five, thanks to medal winning performances from Shianne Smith and Melissa Clarke.

Ms Smith first won the Bronze Medal in the Women’s Shot Putt with a throw of 11.00m, and then won a Silver Medal in the Women’s 100m Hurdles with a time of 15.14.

Not to be outdone Melissa Clarke ran a great race to grab the Silver Medal in the Women’s 400m clocking a time of 57.94.

Bermuda has previously won two medals, with Sean Trott finishing the half marathon in 1:12:22 to give Bermuda our first medal of these Games, and his teammate Stephen Allen finished 11th in a time of 1:16.11, giving Bermuda the bronze medal in the team competition.

Archery

Paul Harshaw finished 38th in the Single FITA Men’s Recurve with a overall score of 842 points.

Shooting

The Bermuda Women’s team of Dwaynette Smith and Maurisa Smith finished 4th in the ISSF 50m Prone Smallbore Rifle Women’s Team event with a score of 1064. Competing in the Men’s ISSF 50m Prone Smallbore Rifle Division Carl Reid finished 16th with 565 points, while Anthony Evans finished in 21st with 484 points.

Badminton

Bermuda’s Mark Haugen has defeated Jersey’s Rob Cottignies 2-1 in their match up, Cottignies won the first set 21-16, before Haugen won the next two sets 25-23, 21-15 to advance. Bermuda’s Rohan Pai went down in straight sets 21-14, 21-12 to Jens Frederik Nielsen from Greenland.

Basketball

A day after going down in overtime to Guernsey the Bermuda Women’s Basketball team rebounded to defeat the Isle of Wight 70 – 32.

Golf

Danian Palanyandi’s opening round of 70 sees him T7th on the Men’s Leaderboard, Camiko Smith is T18th five strokes behind Palanyandi, while Alexander Osbourne is T24th after a first round 76 and Ryan Benevides is in 51st after shooting 84.

In the Ladies Division Ebonie Burgess is currently T6th after her first round 79, while Elizabeth Parsons is T11th after shooting a opening round 85. Katrin Burnie’s first round of 88 has her T22nd and Laura Robinson is 29th after shooting 91.

In the team event the Bermuda Men’s team is in 5th, while the Ladies are also in 5th place.

Sailing

Brett Wright is now in 5th place in the Laser Standard Rig Fleet with 37 points, Wright finished third in the first race of the day before finishing 15th in the next two races, while Rockal Evans is in 6th with 44 points. Evans finished 2nd in the first race of the day before recording finishes of 17th & 11th.

Jordan Saints continues his strong showing in the Laser Radial Rig Fleet, he has now recorded six consecutive top ten finishes with 43 points, while Sara Lane Adderley is in 5th with 56 points.

Squash

Chris Stout defeated Matthew Green from the Isle of Wight 3 – 1, while Juliette Ferrari-McComb went down 3 – 0 to Laura Smith from the Isle of Man.

Tennis

In Men’s Singles action, Ni’am Azhar defeated Alexander Leonard from Cayman Island in straight sets 6-1, 6-1, while Gavin Manders defeated Tony Kjäll from Aland in straight sets 6-0, 6-4. In Ladies action, Jacklyn Lambert won her Ladies Singles match in three sets over Elena Delgado from Menorca 2-6, 6-4, 1-0, while Tyler Smith won her match 6-3, 6-2 against Sandra Moll from Menorca and Tara lambert went down in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 to Gemma Triay Pons from Menorca.
