First Tropical Storm Of Season Forms
The first named storm of the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season has formed, however is not expected to impact Bermuda at all.
As of this morning [June 29], Tropical Storm Arlene packed maximum sustained winds of about 40 mph [65 kph], according to a statement from the U.S. National Hurricane Center.
Arlene was over 150 miles east-northeast of Tuxpan, Mexico, moving at a speed of about 8 mph, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. The storm is expected to turn more toward the west later in the day.
The Atlantic hurricane season spans June 1 to November 30. Meteorologists are predicting the 2011 hurricane season will be a busy one, forecasting as many as 16 named storms in the Atlantic. Nine of those storms are expected to turn into hurricanes — five of them major.
