Police: Counterfeit $50 Bills Circulating

June 15, 2011

The Police have warned the public that there is counterfeit money presently in circulation on the island, particularly Bermuda and U.S $50 bills, and issued a reminder that it is a criminal offence to pass to another, possess, make or reproduce any counterfeit currency.

A Police spokesman said, “The Bermuda Police Service Financial Crime Unit is aware of counterfeit currency presently in circulation on the island, particularly Bermuda $50 and U.S. $50 notes.”

“Businesses and individuals alike are advised to be vigilant regarding these denominations. We also ask that they take note of the individual or individuals passing the notes.”

“The public is encouraged to check for the incorporated security features of genuine currency such as paper quality and embedded watermarks. Anyone with any information about this matter is encouraged to contact the Financial Crime Unit on 295-0011.”

“The public is reminded that it is a criminal offence to pass to another, possess, make or reproduce any counterfeit currency, punishable by up to five years in prison.”

    • Question says:

If you had bothered to check the BPS site before you posted, you would have seen that they didn’t specify either. Perhaps you should take your own advice.

Is there a course or something for those of us who handle money regularly? I am not really sure what to look out for. The BPS could maybe put a little video on their web site indicating exactly which water marks to look for.

    Ay Dun,

I don’t c wut de big deal is…as long as it looks real, n as long as guyz cant tell that its fake, who cares?

WAKE UP PPL, MONEY IS MONEY IS MONEY, N MONEY TALKS OK? EVEN MONEY THAT ISNT MONEY IS STILL MONEY IF U KEEP AN OPEN MIND

We shuld be grateful that ppl r taking it upon themselves to make this fake money, cuz clearly there’s not enuff of it in goverment 2 solve de budget crisis….THIS IS ECONOMICS 101 PPL

My ace girl Crunt-Baldra from rond de way wuz tellin me 1 time dat she wuz playin monopoly n got an idea. She took a couple hundreds from out de box, then went up Belvins to buy a loaf of wheat bread for her ace girl. i wuz like “Crunt-Baldra, I rlly dont think that belvins will take monopoly money”, but she had already left by then. Anyway, moral of de story is, she came back ten minutes later with THREE loaves of bread, n i was like “oh cha”.

If more ppl were like Crunt-Baldra, not only wuld de budget crisis b solved, but arryone would have extra change in dere pockets…all um really tryna say is that counterfit bills r not de problem, but part of de solution.

The quote you posted was actually said by Mahatma Gandhi.

Idea behind it being nothing good will come out of exacting revenge. I do like this quote, by the way.

Hammurabi stated the opposite: “If a man put out the eye of another man, his eye shall be put out.” * Section 196 of the Code of Hammurabi

Hammurabi wrote one of the earliest, if not the earliest, known set of laws. This one was one of the foundation laws where the concept of the punishment being equal to the crime committed was introduced.
