Fireworks Sparkle Over Dockyard Night Sky
Yesterday evening [July 2] fireworks lit up the night’s sky over Dockyard, as American residents in Bermuda and their friends began their celebrations marking U.S. Independence Day.
Independence Day – more commonly known as the Fourth of July – is a holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 – a decision which granted the United States independence from Great Britain.
The U.S Congress voted on July 2, 1776 to declare independence from Great Britain, more than a year after the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War. And two days later – July 4 – the wording of the Declaration of Independence was approved by Congress.
Last year U.S Consul Grace Shelton said, “In addition to celebrating America’s devotion to the ideals of liberty and equality, Independence Day is also a way to bring Americans and Bermudians together to enhance friendship and understanding.”
“We share a 400 year old history, and that is something to celebrate as we move together into the future. Together with the 9000 Americans resident on the Island, I am delighted to celebrate Independence Day with our Bermudian neighbors.”
