“Strike Leaves Cruisers Frustrated & Fed Up”

August 20, 2011

“A bus strike in Bermuda this week is causing headaches for cruisers visiting the destination,” reported USA Today, with their ‘Cruise Log’ section of their website picking up the story from local media.

Their story goes on to give a brief overview of the recent strike action, quoting both local papers. The article has attracted five comments thus far, with the harshest one saying, “Well, I used to think Bermuda understood how important tourists were to its economy. Obviously, I was wrong.”

“Crossing “visit Bermuda” off my “bucket list.” Too many other places want tourists and will do almost anything to keep the tourist business going. Sad to see Bermuda joining the third world.”

  1. My guess is .. says:

    Coming soon ..

‘Don’t these ppl have strikes in their country too ?’

And a whole bunch of other very similar remarks .

    • Black Soil says:

They have a whole load of other bad stuff too. Let’s do it all and maybe no one will visit our shores. My guess is you have no brain.

  2. Camiko Smith says:

SMH. This ridicules. We rely on tourist and these jokers go on strike for something so stupid. Good way to promote Bda.

  3. What is that saying, “There’s no such thing as bad publicity?” Thanks a million Chris Furbert and the BIU!!!! Way to go!

  4. star man says:

    Sad, innit?

  5. observer says:

Thanks Mr. Furbert (BIU) and Ms. Harvey (ex: Bus operator) for the above negative article shown in the USA today. Well done!!! Once again tourist and locals have been inconvenienced because of one person. A situation that could have been resolved through other means than a strike. No thought or care or common sense as to the consequences of a bus strike. Sad situation!

  6. Triangle Drifter says:

The clueless PLP & Union will brush articles like this off as scaremongering. They do not have a clue.

The circus is in town & the clowns are running the show.

    Only in Bermuda.

  7. Wart hog says:

    Banana republic.

  8. PEPPER says:

How sad is that comment? crossing Bermuda off their bucket list !!! these are the old timers that want a safe place to travel before they die….what a mess the tourism department are in….and we have the likes of Brother Furbert and his union causing all of this mess !!!!! and for some reason they get away with this crap…… We need a leader that will put his or her foot down and say to to brother furbert, you are not in charge !!! we are !

  9. I HOPE THAT CHRIS FURBERT READS THE US TODAY NEWS PAPER. SHE IS BACK WITH FULL PAY SO ITS ALL OVER JUST ON HOLIDAY FOR NOW!!!!!!

  10. Onion says:

Until Chris Furbert AND his cronies are voted out by the union members, they will continue to deceive the public in their representation of the facts behind any industrial action.

    This must stop.

Boycott the union. Boycott all of the businesses that they own, including any owned by its officers. Hit them where it hurts…in THEIR pocket. Just like they’ve done to us.

Chris Furbert and his lap dogs must go.

If at the end of arbitration, Ms. Harvey gets her job back, boycott the buses. Some people are still carpooling.

  11. Privatisation. says:

Okay, so we even made USA Today, what a scandal. Chris Furbert I hope you are happy. I agree, Chris Furbert must GO! AS long as he is in charge of H.B.I.C at the BIU its going to bring nothing but turmoil. How dw we as the publlic ask for his resignation. Because when i listened to his news confress, it was like looking square at the devil. I couldnt beleive he thought this action was right and he should have told that bus driver he cant help unless she takes the exam.

  12. Triangle Drifter says:

Boycott the BIU gas station & the theaters. What else do Union officials have their fingers into? I have not bought gas at the BIU gas station since 1981 (did regularly before then), & have never been into a Union theater.

    • UncleElvis says:

I don’t think the BIU is involved with the theatres any more…

I believe they are owned by a private company now.

  13. Onion says:

Bermuda seems to be off in a world of its own, totally isolated from or intentionally ignoring (to its peril) the economic realities facing the western world. In addition, is there a right and wrong any longer? It seems that people can do what they want and get away with it. What does this type of action say to young people?

  14. Bermyman says:

Bermudians!! This Islands own worst enemy!

Seriously though, if we had a non-partizan political system then the government would have no problem privatising this sector of public transport. Once you turn it into a proper business then you would have half of the problems we currently have. But they won’t because they don’t want to loose the votes by making drivers redundant and pissing off the Union and the rest of the Island must suffer. What are we really doing here? If we can’t run a country properly something needs to change or we will keep on shooting ourselves in the foot!
