Hamilton Police Station Officially Opened
On Friday [Oct.7] the Hamilton Police Station was officially opened by Governor Sir Richard Gozney and National Security Minister Wayne Perinchief.
Also present were Commissioner of Police Michael DeSilva, Deputy Commissioner Mike Jackman, Assistant Commissioners Paul Wright and David Mirfield, and other senior police officers.
Following the official opening, there was a tour of the newest facility, which is purpose built and PACE compliant. Though the station has been open for some months already, the official opening was delayed to coincide with this year’s Police Week.
Minister of National Security Wayne Perinchief said, “After several meetings in this new facility and having compared it to the old station I knew so well, I have thought about asking the Commissioner to join a Watch once again. However, contrary to recent reports, news of my demise has been greatly exaggerated. I am fully engaged as the Minister for National Security.
“Finally, the Bermuda Police Service has a facility that matches the importance of the work we demand from them every day. I salute my colleague Minister Derrick Burgess who took on the challenge of fulfilling the promise made to the Police long before this Government came to power. With his team within the former Ministry of Works & Engineering, a number of engineers, contractors, architects and others have delivered a first-rate site that now stands as a beacon for policing in this community.”
“A modern Bermuda requires modern facilities. It cannot inspire confidence in us as a jurisdiction if we are not seen to properly support those institutions upon which we rely to ensure our quality of life. Bricks and mortar cannot make the Bermuda Police Service. Hard working men and women do that, and do it well every day. Dignity at work and pride in the uniform starts with a personal commitment to community enhancement and fair enforcement of the law. After that, the place in which one works must be inspiring and reflective of the value one brings to the community served.
“This Station achieves that and much more. In safety and security, and relative comfort, the men and women of the Bermuda Police Service will now provide that same dedicated service to the people of Bermuda. This site has all of the things required of a modern Police Service and is reflective of a jurisdiction and a Government that has high regard for the rule of law and the safety of all people.
It is a pleasure to join His Excellency the Governor and the Commissioner in officially opening this facility today. I am especially proud of the fact that this represents the fulfillment of an important promise made to the people of Bermuda.”
