Officers Praised For Replica Gun Response
Commissioner of Police Darrin Simons has publicly commended Inspector Anthony Smith and Sergeant Wolde Maxwell for their calm professionalism and effective de-escalation in handling a report involving a minor with a realistic-looking replica firearm.
A spokesperson said, “Darrin Simons, Commissioner of Police, recently commended two officers for their professionalism in defusing a troubling situation involving a minor displaying a realistic looking replica firearm.
“Inspector Anthony Smith and Sergeant Wolde Maxwell, responded to the report after calls were received from members of the public.”
Commissioner Simons stated, “This matter caused me considerable concern given what could have resulted in these circumstances. However, upon being briefed about the level of professionalism you displayed and use of techniques acquired during your training, I was left with a sense of pride in the organization and the women and men under my command.”
Deputy Commissioner, Na’imah Astwood, remarked, “Knowing that after the fact you took the extra time and effort to ensure that all parties felt safe and were satisfied that they were listened to and their concerns addressed, should not go unrecognised. Most importantly, you prevented what could have been a tragic outcome given the uncertainty involved. Thank you and well done”
Sergeant Maxwell recounted “Very often when people see armed police officers at a scene it creates a level of tension. We were able to use calm reassurance instead of force, to persuade the young man and his relatives to do the right thing and work with us to arrive at a positive outcome.”
Inspector Smith commented, “Members of the public tend to view police officers only in terms of enforcing the law. This situation required a different approach and provided an opportunity for those involved to see a gentler side of policing. While our job is to protect the community, there are times when that is better done through dialogue and empathy.”
Had this been in the US that kid could have very easily been shot by police.
All fake guns have an orange cap over the muzzle. Who removed the cap from this one to make it look real? If it was one of the parents what were they thinking?
