In The Pink For Breast Cancer Research

October 31, 2011

Bermuda’s Sigma Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated declared a state of pink alert in Bermuda on Friday [Oct. 28] to show support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The sorority’s first ever “Pink Out Day” encouraged local businesses and organisations to ask staff and employees to dress in pink and donate $5 each to the Bermuda Cancer and Health Center.

Involvement in this fundraising effort reflected an island wide awareness of this deadly disease, a show of support for the survivors, and support for family and friends. Each participating business or organisation was visited by a member of the local chapter to take a picture and highlight their involvement.

In addition, pictures of staff and employees will be included in a newsletter for the Bermuda Cancer and Health Center, in the Alpha Kappa Alpha International Programming Report, and will be submitted for publication to the Alpha Kappa Alpha corporate office in Chicago.

Shawnta Simmons, programme chairperson, stated, “We’re pleased by the level of participation in our first “PINK OUT DAY,” and look forward to making this effort bigger and better next year.”

HSBC, East End Primary, Department of Works & Engineering, HOTT 1075 and MAGIC 102.7 were among the businesses and organizations that answered the call to turn the island pink.
