Smith to Carry Bermuda Flag

October 14, 2011

At the XVIth Pan American Games, Bermuda Chef-de-Mission Philip Guishard named Sailor Malcolm Smith to lead the Bermuda Team in the glittering Opening Ceremony by carrying the Bermuda Flag. The honor has been bestowed in recognition of his steadfast competitive nature in repeatedly dominating his event on a number of occasions.

Smith has been crowned Sunfish World Champion on three occasions in 1994, 1999, and 2003. He is also a seasoned veteran in competing in the Pan American Games – having represented Bermuda in every one of the games since 1987, and winning a Silver Medal in 1999, and 2003 – the current games will be his seventh appearance.

Smith is also an Olympian, having sailed in the Laser class in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. He has been twice recognized as Bermuda’s Athlete of the Year in 1999 and 2003, thereby receiving the applause of his peers for Bermuda’s highest sportsperson recognition.

The Sailing events in the games will commence on Monday in Puerto Vallarta on the Pacific coast of Mexico, and was narrowly spared from the “rage” of Hurricane Jova which at one time was a threat to the event.

Judy Simons, Bermuda Olympic Association President, who is in Mexico supporting the team said, “Smith is a worthy contender for the honor of carrying the Bermuda flag in these games, and that the BOA congratulates him and wishes him well in the current games. She added that his competitiveness and sportsmanship still shines through after many years representing Bermuda and Sailing since his start in International competition in 1975.”
