Volunteers Receive CableVision Service Award
Bermuda CableVision today [Oct.13] recognized Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre’s most prolific volunteers, with Renee Carter, Jan Fraser and Audrey Morbey all honoured with a Bermuda Cablevision Community Service Award.
In honour of the endeavours of the winners, Bermuda Cablevision has made a donation of $3,000 to Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre.
Renee Carter and Jan Fraser were presented with their awards at a ceremony held at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute this morning. Audrey Morbey was unable to attend the ceremony to collect her award in person, but a charity representative accepted it on her behalf.
The event was attended by Minister of Health Zane DeSilva, Bermuda CableVision’s senior management team; Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre staff; along with the winners’ families and friends.

Renee Carter, herself a breast cancer survivor until this summer when cancer returned, has organised an annual event for the past three years. As a result, Ms Carterhas raised over $20,000 on behalf of Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre.
This year’s theme is, “Life after Cancer.” The event has become a popular fixture on the Breast Cancer Awareness Month calendar, attracting 75-150 people each year to listen to inspiring survival stories, sip cocktails, take part in a raffle and silent auction, and to enjoy entertainment and refreshments throughout the evening.
This year’s event is taking place on Saturday night [Oct.15] at Gosling’s Wine Cellar on Dundonald Street, 7-10pm. A minimum donation of $25 is suggested for entry.
Inspired by her mother who beat breast cancer, Jan Fraser began supporting Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre four years ago. Having participated in several long-distance fundraising walks in the U.S., which were followed by survivors’ ceremonies, Ms Fraser identified an opportunity to hold a similar uplifting event in Bermuda after the annual Breast Cancer Fun Walk.
Ms Fraser, a professional speaker and trainer, coaches cancer survivors to speak at the event about their experiences and encourage regular breast screenings. The Survivors’ Ceremony, which just took place last night in Barr’s Park, typically attracts 50-75 survivors to the stage to celebrate life after cancer.
Ms Fraser also works with local cancer care charity, P.A.L.S., and within the community to promote the message of the awareness campaign, “Finding the cure starts with prevention.”
Audrey Morbey began volunteering for the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre, along with two other local charities, when she retired. Over the last ten years, Audrey has been an instrumental committee member for the charity’s annual tag day.
Ms Morbey is responsible for collecting money in St. George’s and St. David’s and has been successful in raising in the region of $20,000 each year. She is recognised by the charity for her ability to connect with people and she uses this strength to volunteer her time throughout the year for various Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre events.

Not only do they raise vital funds for the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre in these challenging economic times, their efforts help to raise awareness of breast cancer and the importance of preventative care.”

Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre has a fundraising goal of $250,000 this month. All funds raised will go towards upgrading its cancer diagnostic equipment and patient support systems; thus increasing early cancer detection and decreasing the time between screening and diagnosis.
