Dellwood: BBFS Lifeskills Programme
Cal Blankendal, CEO Bermuda’s Brazilian Football School [BBFS] launched the BBFS Lifeskills Programme at Dellwood Middle School this week, the second school to take part in the programme which is expected to roll out to all middle schools by 2013.
The programme includes 55-60 minutes of football training followed by a 20 minute lifeskills session which focuses on anti gang, drug and bullying messages, money management, SAT awareness, safe usage of social networking and future career and further education interests.
BBFS CEO, Cal Blankendal stated, “Thanks to HSBC Bermuda’s sponsorship, we were able to expand and offer the programme in both Whitney and Dellwood Middle Schools. The football and lifeskills programme is offered at no cost to participants, and allows students aged 11-14 an opportunity to foster a positive lifestyle in a safe and fun after school environment.”
Phil Butterfield, CEO HSBC Bermuda states, “The BBFS has recognised and addressed a need in our community. Young people require a structured, disciplined environment in which to develop positive character traits that are not only expected on the field of play, but in the classrooms and in our society.”
“HSBC Bermuda provides funding and volunteer hours in the education and development of our children, and we continue to stress the benefits of teamwork, discipline and lifeskills that translate into positive personal and professional experiences.”
In addition to funding, HSBC Bermuda staff take part in the programme and deliver life skills sessions to the students. Khari Sharrieff, Business Product Manager at HSBC Bermuda and a recent inductee to the University of South Carolina Hall of Fame for his goal scoring and former Wolves and North Village striker, will discuss the importance of teamwork and discipline and how these skills, learned on the football field, carry over to the workplace. HSBC Bermuda will also introduce the importance of money management and savings.
Coaches; Dennis Brown (President and co-founder) and Cal Blankendal, with the support of Germaine Smith, provide an important complementary offering to many competitive football leagues in Bermuda. Dennis Brown and Cal Blankendal launched the BBFS at Whitney institute in April of this year.
20 youth players completed the programme and participated in the HSBC Bermuda sponsored BBFS College Showcase where U.S. College Coaches trained the youth players and gave first hand information on what’s required to become a college student athlete. A second college showcase is scheduled for early 2012
In the interest of accuracy it should be noted that Mr Sharrieff attended the University of South Carolina Upstate (the Rifleman) a D2 program and NOT the University of South Carolina (the Gamecocks) a D1 program.
We do have Bermudian hall of fame players at the D1 level. Most topical is John Barry Nusum at Furman University. He was also first team All American i.e. one of the best players at the top level on US College sports in 1999.
Frank
lest I be chided myself for inaccuracy, Nusum was selected first team all American at the D1 level for 3 years (1999-2001)
