Bermuda Weekend Film Series Screenings

November 15, 2011

A documentary film about a baby Orca that makes human friends, and a humorous and charming award-winning French film, are the featured films at the Weekend Film Series on Sunday [Nov. 20].

The monthly event is held in the Tradewinds Auditorium at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute [BUEI].

“The Whale” will screen at 3 p.m. while “My Afternoons With Margueritte” will screen at 5.15 p.m.

Set on the rugged western coast of Vancouver Island, “The Whale” tells the story of Luna, a baby Orca that becomes separated from its pod and attempts to find a surrogate family among the people who live along Nootka Sound.

As word spreads about Luna, people become torn between their love for the lonely young whale and fears that human contact might harm him.

Rated G, the film is an update of the award-winning film, “Saving Luna”, re-edited with new footage, new thematic focus, and narration by the film’s executive producer, Ryan Reynolds.

Gerard Depardieu and Gisele Casadesus star in My Afternoons With Margueritte, a charming and sweet-natured adaptation of the best-selling novel of the same name. Semi-literate Germain [Depardieu] and literature lover Margueritte [Casadesus] strike up an unlikely friendship, transforming their lives and starting them on a new journey — to literacy and respect for Germain and to the deepest friendship for Margueritte.

The film, in French with English subtitles, recently won the Audience Award at the Newport Beach Film Festival.

Tickets, $15, can be purchased in the Oceans Gift Shop at the BUEI, or by calling 297-7314.

The Weekend Film Series, sponsored by Gosling’s, is a joint production of Bermuda Documentary Film Festival director Duncan Hall and the BUEI.
