Blakeney & Grant Found Guilty

November 22, 2011

Sanchey Grant and Jahmel Blakeney were found guilty of attempted murder by a Supreme Court jury this evening [Nov.22].

After telling them that they had to deal with both Blakeney and Grant together, Justice Carlyle Greaves sent the eleven person jury out at 12:50pm today to consider their verdict. The Judge said that the eight woman, three man jury had to return a verdict on two counts for each of Blakeney and Grant.

Both men were charged in connection with a 2009 shooting which left two people injured. On November 13, 2009, Shaki Minors [then 26] and his girlfriend Renee Kuchler [then 24], were shot as they left Southside Cinema in St. David’s at approximately 11.30 pm. Both were rushed to hospital, and recovered from their injuries.

During the trial Prosecutors alleged that Mr Grant was the actual shooter, and that both men are said to be affiliated with the Parkside gang. Both men were remanded into custody, and will be sentenced at a later date.

Wake Up My fellow Bermudians .

The mounting murder rate is an example; it is a symptom of a sick and decomposing society – and the good people appear paralyzed to bring about relief to a suffering homeland.

There are killings on the domestic and criminal front, and life is becoming cheaper than expired food selling below market value on a grocery store’s shelf.

Human, gun and drug smuggling are big business in which no government to date has been able to get a handle on; and corrupt civil servants and other crooked citizens are living big-time on their proceeds – and nothing fruitful is being done to really stop such illegal activities, which are destroying the moral fabric of our beloved country.

Selfishness is the order of the day, and black people seem to be the new oppressors of black Bermudians. We talk to each other with the greatest of disrespect; and hate, jealousy and envy look to be the prevailing culture.

We pass each other by without opening our mouths to say something constructive, and we treat God’s breath as if we are in control. We love our cars and other possessions more than we value our brothers and sisters.

We abandon our elderly folks without mercy, and we don’t give a damn about their welfare.

We allow illicit drugs to poison our children, and the drug dealer is still considered in higher regard than pastors, policemen, politicians and the law.

We invite the guns in to our communities, and when people are killed by them – we become dreadfully outraged.

Children are being nurtured by a diet of television, computer games and the Internet; and we see it as the ideal way to show our love for them.

Many Bermudian youngsters are literally on their own from birth, and we are shockingly surprised and disappointed when they would have committed serious offenses in their youth, or become a murder statistic because of their underworld dealings.

Wake My Black Brothers and Sisters. I have Parents, Sons , Sisters and Nephews living in Bermuda.

Bermuda will always be my Home, I love my Island. Perhaps Minister Wayne Furbert was
singing ” Bermuda is another world ” song by Hubert Smith, if Government is not careful and accountable should include the lyrics ” Bermuda use to be another World “.

  4. george says:

I’m sorry to read about Glen & Gwen’s son Jahmel being found guilty but parents can only raise children to the best of their ability. However, after they reach the legal age of maturity in the eyes of the law they are on their own

    • Can't Take It Anymore says:

Do you really beleive the garbage you are posting on here?

      • george says:

if you know his parents personally, YES!!! @ Can’t Take It Anymore, Do you ??

        • OMG says:

Are these the SAME parents that knew where their son was? And there was a warrant for their son’s arrest? Mmm

          • george says:

MMM!!!, good statement, the law should have followed up on it & brought the appropriate charges with all the time that has elapsed

  5. THE HELL says:

One of them had the nerve to spit in front of the camera. What is wrong with these thugs. Do we need an influx of psychologist in Bermuda. They need hard work and discipline. Also there is to much spitting going on in the streets its becoming an epidemic you have to look down now and then while your walking, its disgusting.

  6. N/A says:

An early Christmas present for Bermuda is this verdict. Being this is the holiday season, I hope Santa doesn’t forget Sanchey Grant and Jahmel Blakeney’s present too, an extra large bottle of KY…

  8. Seymour Kuntzs says:

Did Blakeney wear slippers to court today ? Evil and Knivel crashed and burned today .

  9. Omy says:

Two scumbags off the streets don’t drop the soap!

  10. observer says:

Apples don’t fall to far from the tree. The good book states it clearly in Proverbs that if you discipline a boy properly, as he gets old he will not stray. In any other country the minister would resign, but as we sing the song of Bermuda being another world is so correct. Good night Bermuda, continue to sleep on the issues of integrety and responsibility.

    • JK says:

I don’t agree with your apples and good book comment. You can have 2 brothers both growing up in the same loving, disciplined household and one chooses a good path and the other doesn’t make the same choice. Sometimes parenting can only go so far. There are other influences that take hold as children gow older, including but not limited to peers and school. Peers, in particular, have a stronger influence than parenting after a certain point. Also, your apples comment suggests that the Minister is guilty by association. Guilty of what? Being a bad parent? If so, what is your evidence that the Minister’s direct actions show him being a bad parent?

That said, I’m glad that justice was served.

      • Dee says:

JK you make total sense and glad you could clear that up for those posting negative about the Minister.

    • Dee says:

That is what’s wrong with you people. You are so quick to judge others without knowing the facts. How can you make a comment stating that Apples don’t fall to far from the tree?

Do you know Minister Blakney like that? Probably not. Although I don’t know him personally I could neven judge him based on his sons faults in life. Obvious Minister Blakney is doing something right because he’s one of your leaders.

  11. jumpy says:

The lack of commets as of 10:53pm says volumes

  12. Curious To Know says:

@Observer et al: I know you won’t like it but the comments about Mr. Blakeney as a father and a government minister are unfair. At the time of his son’s previous trial for cannabis possession in 2008, Mr. Blakeney talked about his struggles and sorrows over this son who had refused to follow in the path of the parenting he received in contrast to his other four children who have followed their parents’ guidance.

But if you want to shame a politician, then you should quote Mark Pettingill’s remarks at Jahmel Blakeney’s sentencing in that trial:

“He is a young man of talent. He is a sound engineer and is able to be employed in that profession. This is a young man who has never been incarcerated. He’s 26, he’s not a criminal.” Mr. Pettingill continued: “He has all the attributes in a young black Bermudian male you want to have at 26.”

Perhaps Mr. Pettingill’s judgement was clouded too much by his zeal to earn a fee. We certainly saw his handiwork in getting Andre Curtis off scot free. If Jahmel Blakeney had gotten the sentence he deserved then, he would not have been out on the street to commit this attempted murder. At that same sentencing, Senior Magistrate Warner stated that “There is no doubt that cannabis is considered a soft drug.” He then gave a sentence of 1 year for possession of 112 grams of cannabis with intent to supply ($5600 street value). Despite all this, Jahmel Blakeney is responsible for own foolish and ignorant actions.

  13. george says:

To those who are criticizing the politicians for the wrongs of their children, i hope you all know what your children are doing 24/7 and i also hope that none of them fall into this predicament whatsoever because it’s a not a nice feeling at all.

  14. Downsized says:

Good Riddance to the pair of them, Well done to the BPS, prosecution dept and the Jurors etc… Pity they wont go inside for about fifty years .. or more. What was the purpose of the Juror (Foreman) Not disclosing his ‘relationship’ with the Blakeneys sooner? You are asked that when the jury is being chosen. Also shouldn’t he now be brought back to court and admonished or charged for lying as well?!

  15. The One (Original) says:

One wonders if charges might be brought up against anyone who might have known exactly where one of these boys was hiding in the USA, and might have been supporting him while he was a fugitive of justice. Someone who may even have assisted in his leaving Bermuda. Would that not be illegal in some way?

    One wonders…….

    • Mad Dawg says:

Yes. It’s difficult to see how he could have left the country without some kind of assistance, from a close friend or relative. perhaps the police should look into that.

  16. Just Curious says:

IF YOU DO THE CRIME YOU DO THE TIME:

  17. Yes I says:

Another chapter closed in a Never ending story…Where’s Falcor when you need him LOL…

On a serious note, There is an underworld on this island that is so scary, the only defense many of us will have against it is to pass blind judgement on it. This underworld is made up of the remnants of our own fears, lack of discipline as a society and inability to face the social issues that were swept under the rug to protect our image. This island is hiding behind a veil in order to stop from being punched in the mouth. Start looking in the mirror and ask what have you done to selflessly help another in need, then maybe we’ll start a path to healing.

This is a cry from the youth of Bermuda….Please don’t let the generation behind them see this as the way of life.

  20. Kim Smith says:

Attempted murder… or murder? Didn’t the lady victim lose her baby as a result of being shot in this incident?

    • thanks to myself says:

About time someone talked about the baby that was lost in all this–that is murder, due to the fact of the shooting–i hope to the lord above that they get recharged for the babies death–then let them call out parkside the darkside–and they are fake thugs, real roughnecks like me would never hurt woman and children–if u r that rough u should have just walked right up to him and shot him–but hey they worry about each other so much let them be surrounded by men and let the real men take care of the ladies out here

  21. Just saying... says:

how you raise a child, is how that child will act throughout life, regardless of their age. when ppl come on here and criticise parents of other men that have been convicted, there are VERY few ppl defending the parents but because the parent in this situation is a minister the story is different. puh-lease.

& im 97% certain these boys showed their true colours when they were younger, hope a lesson is learned in jail that they obviously missed out on when they were boys — how to act when the dont get their own way! how rude!! spitting is soo disrespectful.

    • FYI-- Point Taken says:

@Just saying: Very well said and agreed! And whilst so many others forget that death has no name, face, color or ethnicity…. I think also many forget that the seeds sown in 2008 where the same MP assaulted another human being has no bearings on the image and role they play in today’s society. NEWS FLASH – it does and does speak the credibility of parental responsibility.

  22. Austin Smith says:

An unborn child was killed as the result of the actions of these men. Let us not loose sight of this. I would hope that this is considered when the sentence is given. So tragic…

    • george says:

and this is what i can’t understand about this case, why weren’t they charged for the killing of the unborn child

    • deshawn says:

Hear hear – should’ve been two counts attempted murder and one of murder

    • Just saying... says:

i believe that they wouldnt get charged with murder because the law doesnt reach that far. you arent considered a human being until you take your first breath…reason why abortions are legal.. they’ll get whats coming for them mind you they shouldnt have gotten off for the gun possession and ammunition…DNA was present. i guess its too legal to understand why the judge directed a not guilty verdict.

  23. Fed Up Bermudian says:

So I’m thinking that first of all- I don’t think it’s appropriate to hate on Minister Blakeney for his son’s deeds. Adam after all raised Cain, there are all the Biblical stories of brothers who didn’t turn out as their sainted siblings did, so let’s not judge so harshly. As a GROWN man, and NOT a BOY, Jamel Blakeney made his choices, and now he’s paying for them. Let’s hope he pays as fully as he can by the extent of the law.
And my second point…I agree that the loss of the baby should be murder, but I think this wasn’t a point of litigation because of the concept of viability and when life begins. I think a more clever prosecutor could have made this case, but it would have been a little tenuous. I think it’s because all pregnancies are touch-and-go until after the first trimester, so who’s to say she wouldn’t have miscarried in another way- and the embryo or fetus wouldn’t have been able to survive on its own outside the womb at that point in its development. I don’t approve of that line of thought, I am merely offering a possible reason as to why it wasn’t actual murder and only attempted.

Personally, I think both men should hang. I wish we lived in a world of fairy-tales where people this broken can be fixed. We put down vicious dogs, after all…there is no disincentive for this sort of violence, and you can’t treat it by using only a carrot. There is no real stick…
