Cost Fears About Bermuda’s 2013 Island Games

November 22, 2011

Some teams are likely to send fewer competitors to the 2013 Island Games being hosted in Bermuda because of concerns over costs, the BBC reports today [Nov.22].

Jersey and Guernsey — two of the British Channel Islands — have already said their teams will be smaller than normal with individual athletes needing to raise up to £3,000 each to cover the costs of coming to Bermuda.

“Teams have already launched fundraising drives and set up savings schemes earlier than usual,” reports the BBC. “Guernsey’s footballers have indicated they will not be going to Bermuda.”

Chairman of the Guernsey Island Games Association, Dave Inglis, told the BBC: “We’re going with a smaller team but we’re going with 180, so taking away the footballing contingent we’re nearly up to full strength.”

Guernsey topped the medals table in 2011 in the Island Games held in the Isle of Wight with 107 medals.
