Northwood Win 2011 Basketball Classic

The Northwood High School team from Louisiana are the 2011 Bermuda Thanksgiving High School Basketball Champions, with Georgetown District High School team from Canada finishing second, Boca Raton Christian High out of Florida placing third, while the Bermuda Select Team were fourth.

The three-day tournament ran from November 24 – 26, and was started in 2010 by the tournament director and back-to-back, three-time basketball gold medalist in the Small Island Games tournament; Chris Crumpler.

The Bermuda High School Select team was lead by Coach Tim Trott and included Juron Tucker, Khaivon Castro, Rashon Tankard, Josh Liyange, Jordan Rego, Lucas Barbey, Karim O’Conner, Phillip Burgess, Donovan Livingston, Anthony Furbert, Troy Fox Jr., Jahkil Perinchief and Daniel Heintzman.

Day #3: Northwood 71 Georgetown 65

In the first quarter Georgetown surprised Northwood outscoring them 19 – 10, Georgetown continued their dominate play by outscoring Northwood 15 – 14 in the second period to hold a 34 – 24 half time lead. Northwood used a 27 – 17 run in the third quarter to tie the game going into the final period. Northwood kept the pressure on and took full control of the game running out winners 71 – 65.

Day #3: Bermuda 50 Boca Raton 51

In this third and fourth place play-off match Bermuda held a two point lead 12 – 10 over Boca Raton at the end of the first quarter. Boca Raton went on a 18 – 8 run in the second quarter to lead at the break 28 – 20. Bermuda used a 16 – 10 third quarter run to pull within two points going into the final period down 38 – 36. Bermuda outscored Boca Raton 14 – 13 in the fourth quarter, but Boca Raton held the two point advantage going into the final period to win 51 – 50.

Day #2: Bermuda 47 Northwood High 72

Northwood outscored Bermuda 26 – 9 in the first quarter and then held a 20 point lead at the half with the score 41 – 21. Bermuda was outscored 16 – 7 in the third quarter as Northwood led 57 – 28 after three periods. Northwood moved to 2 and 0 in the Classic after they defeated Bermuda 72 – 47, Bermuda had their best scoring period on the tournament thus far when they poured in 19 points.

Day #2: Boca Raton 41 Georgetown 68

In the second game, Georgetown High emerged victorious with a 27 point win over Boca Raton 68 – 41. Georgetown led from start to finish, they held a 16 – 6 lead at the end of the first quarter and then extended the lead at the half to 18 points 32 – 14. Boca Raton made a run in the third quarter outscoring Georgetown 20 – 18, but Georgetown scored 18 more points in the fourth quarter and limited Boca Raton to 7 points to come away with the win.

Day #2: Bermuda 61 – Boca Raton 59

Bermuda have out together the best two quarter performance in this tournament date outscoring their opponents 32 – 14 in the first half. Bermuda held a 14 – 5 lead at the end of the first quarter, before running off 18 second quarter points and restricting Boca Raton to 8. In the third quarter Boca Raton outscored Bermuda 16 – 9 to cut the lead to 11 as Bermuda led 41 – 30, Boca Raton continued the pressure and again outscored Bermuda in the fourth quarter this time 24 – 13 to send the game into overtime locked at 54 – 54. In the overtime period Bermuda managed to score seven points and hold Boca Raton to five as Bermuda won the game 61 – 59.

Day #2: Northwood 56 Georgetown 34

In the nightcap, Northwood lead by 16 at the half, and outscored Georgetown 20 – 8 in the first period, Northwood then scored 13 second quarter points and restricted Georgetown to 9 to lead 33 – 1 7 at the half. In the second half Northwood continued to dominate the game and ended up winning 56 – 34.
