Pompano Couple’s Golf Classic Day #1
The 7th Annual Pompano Couple’s Golf Classic 2011 Tournament kicked off yesterday [Nov.1] at the Port Royal Golf Club, the home of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf. The format today was a 2 ball modified best ball. A record field of 48 couple’s will compete for Net and Gross prizes for the week. .
TEAM NET DIVISION – “Dark n Stormy Flight”
Defending Gross Champions Barbara and John Wellard (North Bay, On) and Marilyn and John McNally (Stouffville, ON) are deadlocked at the top in the net division of the Dark n Stormy Flight after both couples battled the elements to post a 4 under 67. There are five other couples at 2 under par which will make for a good fight in this flight.
TEAM NET DIVISION – “Rum Swizzle Flight”
Kathy and Jim Shannon (North Chelmsford, MA) fired an impressive first round 8 under par 63 net to lead their flight. One shot back however is Patricia and Arunas Vasys (Aurora, IL) on 7 under after they recorded an equally impressive 64 in tough, windy conditions. Although this may look like a two horse race there are still 3 rounds left where anything can happen.
TEAM GROSS DIVISION
Defending Gross Champions Barbara and John Wellard (North Bay, ON) start the defense of their title in perfect fashion after recording a 4 over 74 giving them a four shot cushion going into round two over Janice and Bill Brunton (Airmont, NY) and Kitty and Byron Cottrell (New Smyrna Bch, FL) both recording 8 over 79’s in their first round.
Prizes will be awarded in the gross and net division. Due to popular demand the tournament, the couples have been placed into two flights based on their combined index. ‘A” Dark n Stormy Flight and the “B” Rum Swizzle Flight. The event has also been increased to a four day tournament and continues today at Riddell’s Bay Golf Club
with an 8am shotgun start. The format toaday is a 2 ball scramble.
