Sean May Grow Into A Hurricane Today
[updated 5:45 am, Nov. 10] Tropical Storm Sean could grow into a hurricane as it moves between Bermuda and the US East Coast today [Nov. 10].
Sean’s winds may increase to 75 miles per hour by midday, the US National Hurricane Centre said in an advisory issued at 5 p.m. Bermuda time this morning.
The system’s maximum winds are now 65 mph, up from 50 mph yesterday.
But Sean will probably have weakened back to a tropical storm by the time it makes its closest point of approach to Bermuda on Friday [Nov. 11] according to the US National Hurricane Centre’s forecast track.
Sean is expected to produce one to three inches of rain on Bermuda, according to the Miami-based NHC.

Swells generated by the storm are already affecting the island as well as the southeastern US coast.
Winds from the weather system continue to buffet Bermuda as they have since the weekend when Sean was still a near-stationary low-pressure front located between Bermuda and the Bahamas.
Bad weather and gale-force winds caused by the system forced the postponement of the World Rugby Classic’s opening games on Sunday [Nov.6], delayed a cruise ship’s arrival in Bermuda and disrupted a yacht rally en route to the island, forcing one crew to abandon their vessel on the high seas.
Some ferry services have been cancelled this week and there are continuing reports of sporadic power blackouts around the island caused by the high winds.
Moisture from Sean will stream northward as early as this morning into the US Northeast, said the NHC, dropping rain in Long Island and Boston.
Sean, the 18th named system of the Atlantic hurricane season, is expected to pass within 130 nautical miles of Bermuda on Friday [Nov. 11] according to a 4:30 p.m. forecast by the Bermuda Weather Service.
The BWS issued tropical storm warning for Bermuda yesterday.
“Tropical storm Sean, 330 nautical milesto our west-southwest, will move northeastward today, with its closest point of approach about 130 nautical miles to our northwest early Friday morning,” said the BWS this morning in a 5.30 am advisory.
“Gusty winds around showers increase strong, then reach tropical storm force by tonight, continuing overnight into Friday morning. The weekend brings settled weather with easing winds.”
Tropical storm-strength winds of at least 39 mph reach out about 255 miles from Sean’s core. The system is moving north at six mph, the NHC said.
