Minister, Governor, Police To Meet

January 9, 2012

[Updated] National Security Minister Wayne Perinchief, Governor Sir Richard Gozney and the Commissioner of Police are scheduled to meet this afternoon [Jan.9] in the wake of last night’s shooting which claimed the life of a 24-year-old-man.

“The senior command of the Bermuda Police Service will brief us on this latest incident and the status of the investigation,” the Minister said.

“Senseless and tragic,” is how Minister Perinchief described the incident, which marked both the first shooting and the first murder of 2012.

“Another family is mourning today and our thoughts and prayers are with them as they come to grips with this tragic, sudden loss. I am confident that the Police will investigate this matter thoroughly and work around the clock to bring the perpetrators to justice.”

“The people of Bermuda have demonstrated their support for strong action by the Police and for my part, I shall continue to make clear the Government’s support for enforcement action that disrupts the rhythm of gang activity and makes the gang lifestyle an untenable choice for young people in this community,” concluded the Minister.

Opposition Leader Craig Cannonier said, “Our deep sympathy, our thoughts and our prayers are with the families and friends of the two men who were shot, especially those of the young man who died.

“If this assault was gang-related, it underscores the revulsion all sane people in Bermuda must feel at the senselessness and the stupidity of the gang lifestyle. I am constantly amazed that it is young Bermudian men from Bermudian families who are involved, because this ugly, more or less random violence is not a part of the Bermudian culture I grew up in.

“We must, as a community, commit ourselves to making sure that we rid Bermuda of this curse. That means, at the very least, helping the Police as much as we possibly can to bring those involved to justice. Unless we do that with courage and with determination, we will doom ourselves to this kind of suffering for good.

“I am dreading the thought that our young children might begin to think that getting involved with gangs and the violence they cause is normal, a required rite of passage into adulthood, because that will just about destroy any hope we have of putting a stop to it.

“At this time I urge my colleague, the Minister of National Security, the Hon Wayne Perinchief, to redouble his efforts to get all the elements of his plan to combat gang violence into place, including Operation Ceasefire, a measure the One Bermuda Alliance believes will do vital work in the struggle we are all involved in,” concluded Mr Cannonier.

Area MP Walter Roban said, “I wish to express my sadness that the residents of The Glebe Road, Pembroke East area were once again faced with an act of senseless violence on their doorsteps on the night of January 8, 2012. It is also a tragedy that another young Bermudian male is the victim and another family has lost a loved one.”

“It is of the utmost priority that the perpetrators be apprehended and face the full extent of the law and justice system. The island of Bermuda, all her residents and the government have clearly expressed zero tolerance for this behavior and we support all the efforts of the Police Service and others to stem violent crime in our community.

“I encourage anyone who may have information that will assist in solving this crime to cooperate with the authorities. My heartfelt condolences go out to the family of the victim,” said Mr Roban.

At approximately 9pm last night the shooting occurred in the Glebe Road area of Pembroke, and saw two men injured. Both were rushed to hospital, where the 24-year-old man died as a result of his injuries. The other victim is not believed to have life threatening injuries. The Police have not yet officially named the murder victim, however it is anticipated they will do so later today.

BLAH BLAH BLAH – Lets see what these distinguished Gentlemen are planning to do to avoid the problems which DO NOT EFFECT THEM.

    • Be 4real says:

Real is Real Think about what you are saying before you make such an Asinine comment… Really what can the “distinguished gentlemen do if parents are harbouring their gun wielding kids??? Making excuses day after day for their actions?? the community has more knowledge of who are making these senseless killing so we need to speak out!! If you have any suggestions speak out dont just point fingers

      • real is real says:

I understand your comments but we are now 3-4 years into this consistent ignorance and NOWWWWWW they want to have a meeting. Families are mourning, businesses are closing, night life is dead, ride byes, stick ups, armed robberies and soon our expats are not gonna feel safe. DONT YOU THINK THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN A PRIORITY FROM DAY ONE AS WE LIVEEEEEEE AND SURVIVE OFF OF EXPATS AND TOURISM. IE PEOPLE THAT CAN GET UP AND GO HOME TOMORROW. Go ahead remove allll expats and all tourism, bet you any $ we be 3rd world in less than a year with the alreadyyyyy fragile economy. Can you afford ya belco bill, i know i cant and i do not live beyond my means. This island now has toooo many issues which cannot be fixed over night.

How can we stop the current gang problem if the parole board which is suppose to protect us lettn ppl out like birds.

how can we stop the youths between 15-20 for not repn a gang or choosing a destructive lifestyle as we have no trade schools. they think they are just dumb

these gang leaders parents MUST be living in poverty to accept this behavior. that not my son crap is played out.

when ya belco bill cant be paid, your mortgage is behind and your pride is high and you have a son making 3-600 a day what other options do you have as a parent.

        REALIZEEEEEE

hat these gang leaders parents KNOW their gang names, majority of the time their name came from the parents, turned neighborhood name and now gang name. think about it YES the parents know what their children are doing. Are they scared? are the worried? have they washed their hands? have they thought of calling popo? bet you if their house got busted and they did time for the drugs and weapons found on their premises they would talk.

        REALIZEEEEEE

that bermuda has circles of friends, click, statures etc. Eg the expats, upperclass, vp, avp, presidents, ministers of parli, premiers etc are not direct, no where close.

teachers, lawyers, etc MIGHT get direct wind but it depends on the family line.

it is very easy to escape the issue. try this for a month dont watch bda news, dont log onto bernews etc and see how ya direct life is affected by this gun crime????? in one ear and out the other. “oh another shooting how sad” back to my tea and cookies or should i say crisp.

this is exactly how as i said the distinguished gentleman are being affected. in one ear and out the other.

how can you increase tourism with news like this in the paper every other day, or updates

how can you better these upcoming young men with no trade schools

how can you cut this violence off at the head. YOU CANTTTTTT

its like having galvanized piped with a leak caused by rust where the flakes are falling off and the leak getting bigger. You cannot fix a rusted galvanized pipe, or add a new elbow to it, it would not blend with the new pvc.

so like i said lets see what these men plan on doing to stop the current problem and stop the next generation from following suit?

        • Yup says:

Maybe in this meeting there will be a recognition that the gangs rule and not the PLP or the govenor. And then….WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY GOING TO DO ABOUT IT.

    • PEPPER says:

I agree with real, tHe gangs are running this Island and they have no fear !!!!
Bermuda needs help…. if we ever needed a consultant this is the time for one. cause we sure do not know how to deal with these gangs.

    • PEPPER says:

I am watching Gary Moreno interview Wayne Perenchief this man needs to retire … he is a total idiot, and Gary just proved it .. thank you ZBM for having the best newcaster in Bermuda .

  2. Tired says:

We need to get a grip on this now because if we want to see Bermuda the way it use to be we need to get a grip of this thug life behavior for something really seriously takes place on this 21 square mile Island. If we can’t hang in this country we need to start instricting some serious jail time and maybe have them watch Lock Up in LA an see if this is the life they want to live and let them see how real criminals live day in and day out.

    • OMG says:

??? We need to re-direct the Parole board. Has anyone noticed how the violence has increased since some people have been released from “Playgate”??

    • Lazy Fools says:

I agree. We totally need to get a grip of this thug life behavior. My only question is how do we go about “instricting” serious jail time?

  3. N/A says:

Oooo the Governor is involved now?! Boy you gangsters are in some serious trouble now! You guys had better stop. If he tells his boss Elizabeth Windsor, the sh%t is really gonna hit the fan…

  4. No fixing it says:

“Before something serious happens…”?!?!?!? Are the shootings and murders not serious? Is the pathetic government running our country into debt not serious? Is the thoughtless population who blindly votes based on race not serious?
There is no way to fix this country now! Get out while you can…

    • Can't Take It Anymore says:

What are you trying to say when you say “Is the thoughtless population who blindly votes based on race not serious?”??

To me, all I get from that part of your statement is that you are saying black people that vote PLP are thoughtless!! I hope you are black, because if you are white………………

  5. Keepin' It Real.....4Real!! says:

“Minister, Governor, Police To Meet” ….Does this mean the possibility of a UK Security Group shall soon be visible…?? Patroling our streets in armed vehicles like Afghanistan….ready to shoot then ask questions …? Just like any Game, one team is the winner and one teams is the loser…well im putting my money on the highly trained SOLDIERS…i sure hope so…So Parents , if u don’t want to watch your child die, then get a grip on them NOW!!!!…let the Security Minster deal with them before your neighborhood Minister has to deal with them.
This is 2012 …No time for F#@k!n’ around people!!
(or we can go INDEPENDANT…with a corrupt Government and NO Regiment)maybe the Bermudian missionaries in Haiti would have a reason to return home to take care of YOU!!!! yes YOU!!!

  6. Curious George says:

Get out while you can? So everyone should packup and leave then?

  7. just sayin says:

it’s not about what the police do now but what the courts do later.

  8. amen says:

They’re about 15 dead bodies too late. Let’s keep it all the way real.

It’s amazing how a simple facebook search allows me to figure out who’s in a gang, what gang it is, who’s affiliated and what they are up to yet the police seem to be totally clueless and incompetent to everything that is happening. Such is life in Bermuda.

  9. CAT says:

The police are not incompetent nor clueless…they know who the members are BUT you cannot arrest someone simply because they are in a gang..Get a life/clue!!

  10. USObserver says:

CAT – Where do you get your facts from or is it just your thoughts? Knowledge is Power. It is my understand that the Police CAN arrest you “simply” because you are in or affiliated with a gang, especially if there is sufficient evidence. A person who is in a gang that has caused harm or death on another person, can be arrested. Questions and interrogation procedures conducted, etc etc etc…BUT the Police are not doing that and that’s a question that needs answering. I say get them all off the streets now…since the Police know who they are.

    • walls says:

They don’t have time for that, too busy busting those real criminals riding around with their Ipods!!

    • CAT says:

They cannot arrest you!!! They can pick you up for questioning and try to get information out of you. If a gang member is sitting on the side of the road they cannot arrest them just because they are in a gang!!! Of course if there is sufficent evidence of that member commiting a crime they can!
My comment was in reply to “amen”. Anyone can go on FB and see that BUT you still cannot arrest them! Think about it!

      • Notorious says:

But that wasn’t amen’s point, the point IS they know who they are so like USObserver said if you know who they ARE chances ARE that they are doing illegal activities. Round them up and interrogate them-that’s very legal and hey what do you know they just might actually find some murderers or two.

        • CAT says:

Like I said you cannot arrest them! They can do anything other than that UNTIL they find something to arrest them for!

          • Tommy Chong says:

Police can’t arrest them but government can put no loitering signs up where they deal & when they do loiter then arrest them. Put the squeeze on them daily using the misuse of drugs act which can be used on anyone police have an inkling of suspicion about. Give them daily cavity searches till their rumps are sooooo sure!!! they can’t sit on the wall anymore. Make laws that limit the amount of physical cash that someone can pay on an item without using a card. These punks travel around with rolls in their pockets laughing at the hard working Bermudians. I know car sales men who have had a briefcase full of cash handed to them as payment. Those who whine about rights being revoked BOOO!!!! HOOOO!!!! Who will you whine to when you can’t walk down the street without being robbed by thugs. Back in the day robocop (BDA Cop’s Nickname not the movie) would ram people who gave him a chase off their mopeds if given chase & no one could say police brutality because the judge would say you should’ve stopped for the flashing lights. Now people can get away with murder LITERALLY.

  11. ishta says:

I wonder if the will discuss changing the life sentence term, like to maybe 125yrs..highly unlikely…my prayers go out to the families…peace to All..

  12. Terry says:

    Drugs, and infidelity, jeleous, ecconomics.

    Peace.

  13. Get Out Of Bermy says:

Please listen Bermuda!! TELL YA CHILDREN SAVE THERE MONEY AND “GET OUT OF BERMY”…..NOW!!!!

  14. young n$#ga says:

All u ppl is just retarded, get of this dumb s%$t, stfu & live ya’ll f%$kin lives… All u do on hurr is complain complain complain, st$u n go help the police then since u keep givin oout ways 2 stop it, f%$k u on here runnin ya’ll mouths get off ya’ll a$s n f%$k off this if u want this s%$t stop… F%$k go join the police squad, all u ppl on here just talk 2 f$#kin talk wait till u get the right story then run ya’ll f^%kin traps… All I hear is thugs n gangs how da %$ck u kno if a white ma’f$#ka done it or a old f%$kin crackhead, coulda been ya f&%kin papa dat done it… All ya’ll ppl just st&u on hea n go be a f*&kin officer…

    • Back says:

Please repeat, I have no clue what you just said…

    • Dee says:

….and we wonder why this Island is in the trouble it is??!!! There are those out there that cannot string a sentence together, cannot express themselves without using profanities and have simply just lost the plot.

    • rightious vigilant says:

we all can tell that u either must have been an ignorant high school drop out or ur mama needs to smack u in ur foul mouth…since u so defensive, why dont YOU go out n do something about the issue at hand instead of trying to roast ppl on here venting about a situation that is affecting all of us, half you yung bucks talk talk talk bout this n that but yet ya’ll befriend the same a**holes who would kill someone over something stupid, or know wats going on…chat the business on bbm or use it as a topic of everyday convo instead of thingin bout the grieving families whom are looking for justice and peace after such a calamity..stop chattin foolishness!

    • like someone said says:

A perfect example of why trying to talk to these twats is not going to make any difference at all . They’re illiterate and know eveything. Plus nothing is their fault.

    • Peaches & Cream says:

      To ‘Young n$#ga”

      I’m really praying for you!!

  15. Terry says:

Hey, let “Young n$#ga” spew their crap. The cyber police are watching….ISP et al is a bitch with a warrant. Probabley got a scope on the building right now. Fools.

  16. Don't be deceived says:

Did Mr. Cannonier say more or less “random” violence!? There’s nothing random about it! These boys know exactly what they’re doing and to whom they’re doing it! Premeditated, purposeful and predictable!

  17. Bermudians jus Talk says:

Blame the WEED!!This guy is a REAL ASS!!!Wat world u living in????I can remember u was u cryn foul when Dr Brown didnt have u in His Government!!I See WHY!After all this EVIL goin on in the streets and in UR Government, all u can do is Blame it on the WEED.BERMUDA wake up,its not UNTIL the BPS feels threatened or these jokers in Cabinet!!Time some WHITE guy or Kid is whacked then u would REALLY wake up!!Until then PHIL keep SUCKIN ^%$# and smokin UR WEED JOKER!!SMFH
