Minister Updates On St. Regis Hotel Plans

April 1, 2012

Minister of Business Development and Tourism Wayne Furbert said his Ministry had made “considerable progress in bringing construction of a new St. Regis Hotel for Bermuda closer to being realised.”

Minister Furbert said, “We have put the hotel developers together with the Mayor and Corporation of Hamilton and have urged them to find common ground for the good of Bermuda. And I am encouraged by the latest meetings which have seen significant results.”

The new St. Regis Hotel, said to incorporate many modern features for today’s international business traveller, has been subject of lengthy discussions over several months between the developers and the Corporation of Hamilton who hold the lease of the proposed site. Minister Furbert said he has been working with the two parties over several weeks regarding the lease.

He said, “We are, today, closer to reconciling these issues. Moreover as Minister, I can confirm that I have seen the commitment letter from the firm who are prepared to finance the project and I am convinced that with a high level of goodwill on both sides, we can now move the project ahead. Time, however, is of the essence.

“The agreement has fixed timelines for its development, and the respective parties are fully aware of their mutual obligations, which are enveloped in the executed leases, and agreed herein.”

Minister Furbert added that he was working with all parties involved in financing and constructing the hotel to ensure that everything possible is done to adhere to the fixed timeline and schedule.

He said, “The St. Regis project is so very important to Bermuda. It will create many jobs which will stimulate our economy and will demonstrate, in the most practical way, Bermuda’s ability to attract top hotel management groups, like Starwood, to the Island and give confidence to future investors.”

Minister Furbert said he expects to provide a fuller update to the public in the coming weeks, when all the respective parties including the developers can provide more details of the proposed luxury development.

lol so basically this is an update that we’ll be updated later???

as much as i want to give him his credit, this is the same nonsense we heard from EB each time.. there are no dates, no names, no figures… just “im working on it and will tell you about it later”

    • Yup says:

News Flash!!!!! No one is going to invest 100′s of millions in Bermuda if they believe the govt is slowly but surely heading towards bankrupcy. Every major investor is pulling out. Once the hospital is built there will be no game in town.

  2. Navin Johnson says:

The 403rd update on the st. Regis. Never happen just like the park Hyatt electioneering nothing more

  3. Wayne Furbert says:

Stay tuned my friends – more to come.

    • pepper says:

      WHEN ???????

    • pepper says:

Wayne is that the best response you can give to cancer ? WHAT A JOKE YOU ARE….

    • navin johnson says:

I’m certain there will be more press releases that we are oh so close just like the last 4 years starting with Ewart Brown and Park Hyatt construction beginning by year end 2007 just before the election…how about this…come back only when you have the deal done and no more of these contrived press releases whether St. Regis or Bazarian….only then will you have some believers and until then you are the party of liars only interested in filling your own pockets who have ZERO credibility outside of your shrinking political base…..

    • Just saying!! says:

More Press Releases – You mean

  4. Cancer says:

Listen Mr Minister – we no longer want to hear this crap! This is nothing new dammit!!! No hotels will be built under the PLP government and that’s the bottom line. Once the Cog calls an election and the OBA take over – we will get all sorts of offers from developers. Paula please call an election so we can get some hotels built under the OBA!!!

    • Wayne Furbert says:

Cancer what are you going to do when it happens? LOL

      • pepper says:

Minister Furbert, do you think that Bazarian is waiting to see the outcome of the election before he goes ahead with this project ?

      • Mad Dawg says:

Another “promise”, like the ones in the past? The only way a hotel happens is if the government, desperate to hold onto power at any cost, underwrites the cost somehow. Which would be disastrous.

  5. Triangle Drifter says:

It is not going to happen. Not anytime soon. Not as long as the PLP are in power. Not as long as IB is fleeing Bermuda.

Who in their right mind would put so much money at risk given the economic situation of Bermuda & PLP hostility towards IB, the very industry the this hotel needs as its customer base?

Vote the PLP out & see a change of plans towards building hotels.

  6. wizeazz says:

I would not bother with a parking lot hotel,a hotel with a new marina,a hotel with a golf course,a hotel with a spa,any hotel….because unles this country gets a grip on crime all the rooms will be empty…for ever!

  7. rick olson says:

    Credibility ….PRICELESS

  8. Cancer says:

Mr Minister – when you switch to the OBA then we’ll get many hotels built. I give you credit as you as the UBP leader are the hardest working man in the PLP – but no developer wants to invest in Bermuda under the PLP and you know that’s the whole problem – and you know you joined the wrong party ! Actually right now the flipflop PLP has more UBP members than the UBP ! With your help the PLP are trying to look more UBP… Is that to try and get some hotels built Mr Minister?

    • pepper says:

Wayne, how do you live with yourself.. you had so many negative things to say about the P.L.P. WHEN YOU WERE THE LEADER OF THE U.B.P. how the hell do you sleep at night ? at the end of the day what is your agenda ?

      • Jamel Smith says:

@ Pepper how do you live with yourself when you was a member of the UBP. Now you have change to the UBP/OBA to deceive my black brothers and sisters to vote for your party just to win black votes. How the hell do you sleep at night?

@ Wayne keep your head up and keep doing the peoples work. You will have your haters. As I recall when you was part of the UBP they only used you to win black votes. Continue to work hard, my grand father says for all of the people who talk about you and think it’s effecting you. … someone is always gonna talk about them.. so you might as well give them something to talk about.

Why the UBP/OBA needs a black leader!
In the 1970s saw the UBP majority in Parliament decline as the PLP grew in popularity. This trend stopped following the appointment of Sir John Swan as Premier on 15 January 1982. Under Swan’s leadership, the second black man to lead the party, the UBP control of Parliament strengthened through the elections of 1983 and 1985 where it reached an all-time high of 31 seats, though this reversal ended in 1989.

Since that time the UBP/OBA have continued to front black brothers and one sister to win votes. They did the same thing to Mr. Kim Swan and now they are trying the same plan with Mr. Craig Cannonier.

        • Sandgrownan says:

That’s a vortex of stupid right there

        • Finally left! says:

Jamel, the mentality that you and other PLP supports have is simply useless…

Many say they dotn want to vote UBP or OBA because its too white..

Then you say the only black faces are there to get black votes…

Simplifying everything you said, you dont want to vote for those parties because of the history.

It is humorous though that PLP will discredit the current OBA using race…while the OBA will discredit the PLP because of their recent track record..

And somehow we think this island will get better? please..

        • Rockfish#2 says:

          @ Jamal Smith,

Will Zane DeSilva become the first white leader of the PLP?
          Deputy Leader maybe?

        • White Bermudian male says:

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news guys, but jamel is speaking the truth!

Jamel I like to tell you this my friend although that may have been the

plan before, the OBA or UBP/OBA as you call us are trying to do things

          different.

Come to meetings and see for yourself.

I extend the olive branch. http://www.onebermudaalliance.bm

@ Pepper and Sandgrownan you both have been acting like UBPs version of

the Lavern Furbert of the PLP. Your both acting like racist and as a white

Bermudian I can read behind your lines. It’s no wonder the young people

are acting like animals reading the comments you both have written on here

for the past months. I hope your children are not the same.

@ Cancer keep up the good work many of your comments hit the nail on the head.

  9. Cancer says:

Hey minister Furbert – someone reminded me that you forgot to say “April Fool” after you made your announcement!! Lol !!!

  10. pebblebeach says:

    whatever wayne…same ole same ole…

  11. James says:

More utter crap from the PLP. Sorry but you are the ones that chose that horrible little man to ruin our country. Innocent current PLP members may be but we dont trust you. You make your bed you are going to have to lie in it for a while.

  12. Truth (Original) says:

I have to give Minister Furbert credit for his hard work. This is the most activity I’ve seen in Tourism. I think he has some good ideas. I am no longer a fan of the PLP but we ought to give credit where it is due

I appreciate his energy and his work ethic.

    • star man says:

Hard work is great; but results are better.

    • Finally left! says:

You are correct truth… and Furbert has put on some energy..

but really, with regards to this “hotel update”.. is it and different than any of the updates we’ve had in the past? As said before, its simply an update to say we’ll be updated later..

      • verbal kint says:

The great coach John Wooden said, “Never mistake effort for achievement, and never mistake achievement for accomplishment.” Effort is not enough. Perceived progress is not enough. The only thing that matters is what is actually getting accomplished.

  13. Familiar says:

While I truly appreciate the effort being made and the update on said effort, I find myself wondering about the necessity for this project at this point, and hence I have to wonder about the business sense of the developer and the firm promising financial support.

I think the thing that I would appreciate knowing about more is the basis for the belief that we need this project. Yes, it will give up work in the construction industry, yes, it will probably bring some jobs for Bermudians in the short term, but in the long term?

  14. Rick O'shea says:

Total and complete BS from the party who has a history of giving us total and complete BS. Who, but the brain dead could possibly believe any of this rubbish.

When it comes to new hotel announcements, PLP has proven over and over that they have zero credibility. Electioneering plain and simple. Completely shameless and designed to appeal to that ever diminishing section of the population who still believes in these incompetents.

  15. Bermuda Too Expensive says:

There is too much lower priced competition in other vacation destinations. Unless Bermuda gets its prices down no new hotels will be opened. Under current economic conditions new hotels in Hamilton and St. George’s are just pipe dreams. Saying there will be new hotels is just to get votes in the up-coming election.

  16. Argosy says:

    Not worth a comment IMHO…..

  17. Family Man says:

If anybody wants to build a hotel in Bermuda there’s already a few built that they are desperate to sell:

    Pink Beach
    Newstead
    Belmont

Why build new when you can buy for pennies on the dollar.

Then there are a few others, not yet in receivership, but oh so close ….

  18. Concerned says:

You all realize that anyone can type in ‘Wayne Furbert’ as name and post here right?

  19. Cancer says:

What is that nonsense from Jamel Smith? PLP got more UBP members than the UBP!

  20. Gvt Mechanic says:

I just can’t understand why we need a new hotel in Hamilton when the existing ones are half empty? What about the existing hotels? Should the Gvt not help them fill their empty beds before building something new? How much is the Govt underwriting this project for? I’ve heard of some downright stupid projects that the PLP Ministers are pressing forward right now – is this another one? SMH :(

    • Hope this helps says:

@Gvt Don’t worry the OBA will be in charge soon. Now go back to work and fix my buses. Why are you on a computer anyway? Your suppose to be in the garage. Another lazy govt worker.

      • Gvt Mechanic says:

        @hope this helps

How dare you! You do not know me OR my circumstances. Am I not entitled to pop home for some lunch? I am far from a lazy Government worker, I work two jobs 7 days a week to feed, clothe and educate my children and I am proud of those facts. So don’t be so judgemental.

And by the way – it is people like you who are costing the OBA votes with your santimonious ill-thought out posts. Stick to the subject or don’t post at all.

PS: I can’t fix the buses – the Minister has spent all the money on overpriced projects

  21. Jim Bean says:

minister furbert – tell the truth about the “hotel” – how many rooms are there going to be vs fractional type timeshare condos in the development?

  22. Winnie says:

Until I actually see taxis pulling up to any new hotel properties then I will believe. Why so, because we have heard it all before from the good Dr. Funny all this mouth action as an election draws near, I hope things do work out because we do NEED things to get going in Bermuda regardless of which party is in power, I’m all for BERMUDA the country and it’s peoples and not for some BS party, because people are putting their party before the country too often. The process seems to be all about winning an election and nothing else but thinking how to win the next one after that. So what about my children coming up that’s the question to you all so called leaders in the UBP,PLP,OBA and the others.

  23. YES MATE! says:

So Wayne tell me this. With businesses packing up and leaving Bermuda why would anyone want to build a hotel for business men? You didn’t take log at all to start talkin and actin Pee el Pee did you!

  24. Just sayin says:

Keep going Flip Flop Furbert, you too will get an award from some crazy new yorkers.

  25. Can't Believe says:

Ok Wayne thanks for the update to update us from the last update.
Now what i would like to ask is are there contracts in place that were signed that have contract obligations that can mandate answers from the potential investors and contractors on this project?

Another point is what about Mr. Bazarran and the old Club Med project, all the hype to blowing it up but all hush hush on the progress on that one too.

The old Sonesta site what about that? Fabian destroyed that Island Construction got the contract to demolish and clean the site up and now no news on that site.

Yet in the media I hear alot about we need more beds to attract tourists.
Three perfectly good locations to build and again government blowing hot air up the peoples backside so they can get re elected.

STOP THE TALKING PEOPLE AND START ACTING.
