Nicole Stoneham Appointed As 5th Magistrate

April 18, 2012

His Excellency the Governor Sir Richard Gozney, after consulting with Chief Justice Ian Kawaley, has appointed Bermudian Ms. Nicole Stoneham to be Bermuda’s 5th Magistrate effective April 16, 2012.

Ms. Stoneham has served as a Temporary Magistrate sitting in the Family Court for the last two years and her temporary position has now been made permanent.

Born in Bermuda, she attended Purvis Primary School, Warwick Academy and the Bermuda High School for Girls. After obtaining a BA Degree in English Literature from Dalhousie University in Canada in 1987, she obtained a Bachelor of Laws Degree [LLB Hons] from Buckingham University in England in 1991.

Ms. Stoneham was called to the Bar of England & Wales [Grays Inn] in 1992 and to the Bermuda Bar in 1993.

Prior to her appointment to the Bench in 2010, Ms. Stoneham’s legal experience embraced a mix of public and private legal service, including litigation experience as Crown Counsel in the Attorney-General’s Chambers [1995-2000] and with Trott & Duncan [1993-1994] and Milligan-Whyte & Smith [2000-2002].

The Chief Justice and the Senior Magistrate both acknowledge the support of the Secretary of the Cabinet in the creation of an additional post necessary to enable the Family Court in particular and the Magistrates’ Court generally to effectively handle their workflows which have increased significantly in recent years.
