Teen Pleads Guilty To Handbag Snatch
In Plea Court yesterday morning [Apr.9], 18-year-old Hamilton Parish resident Denzil Chase pleaded guilty to snatching a tourist’s handbag on Thursday 5th April. He was remanded into custody at the COED to re-appear for sentencing on 12th April.
Senior Magistrate Archie Warner was told how the teenager, along with an accomplice who is still being sought, had snatched a woman’s handbag while she was walking on the road near Crystal Caves. The two men were on a bike and sped off. However a bystander saw the mid-morning action, called the police, and gave police the bike’s registration number.
Nearby police patrols responded. The bike, with the two riders still aboard was soon spotted on Panorama Drive in Hamilton Parish. A quick but short police chase resulted in the pair attempting a fast U-turn which caused them to crash into the police car. Chase was captured, and the other man ran off and, for now, remains at large.
On questioning, Chase took Police to where the bag had been jettisoned. The bag was recovered and Chase admitted to Police that he had taken $46 from the bag. However an iPod valued at $200 that was in the handbag was not recovered. The couple, from Maryland, were able to identify the bag and confirmed that except for the iPod and the money, all other items were returned.
Defending, lawyer Elizabeth Christopher made no application for bail and asked that Chase be remanded at the COED rather than at Westgate. The Magistrate obliged.
