Families Invited To Volunteer Together

June 27, 2012

Family Community Day will take place this coming Saturday morning, June 30, at the Botanical Gardens in Paget. Families are invited to sign-up and volunteer to help a local charity complete a fun family oriented project. The event has been organised by The Centre on Philanthropy.

“We sent out requests to our member charities asking them to submit a project that they need help with and that could be accomplished by families working together,” explains Jennifer Pitcher, The Centre’s Volunteer Coordinator. “The charities have been very creative in coming up with projects that we can do at the event. It is going to be a lot of fun.”

The activities range from making cat toys to reading stories and playing games. Participating organisations include; Gina Spence Productions in Christ, KBB, Bermuda National Trust, The Eliza Dolittle Society, Masterworks Foundation and Matilda Smith Williams Seniors Residence.

To sign-up interested volunteers can visit the ‘News & Updates’ section on The Centre’s website. Here they will able to learn about each activity and sign-up as a volunteer through www.volunteer.bm.

“We are encouraging people to sign-up beforehand because there are a limited number of spots for each activity,” continues Ms Pitcher. “Volunteers will be assigned on a first come, first serve basis so signing up online is important. It will also help us with logistics.”

Nikita Robinson, from HOTT 107.5’s Ladies Room, will be on hand to host the event whilst CKC Cares Charity will provide the entertainment. This is a pilot event for what The Centre hopes will become an annual event.

“Volunteering is a great way for families to spend time together,” concludes Ms Pitcher. “There are so many opportunities to give back to the community and we hope this event will spark even greater interest in volunteering as a family and raise awareness for the participating charities.”
