Olympic Basketball: Australia Defeats Great Britain
[Updated] Bermuda’s Jenaya Wade-Fray will be part of Great Britain’s team for their Olympic game vs Australia, which will begin at 6.15pm Bermuda time this evening [July 28].
Wade-Fray — who will be wearing #9 – is believed to be the first Bermudian basketball player to make an Olympic appearance. At 5ft 9in Wade Fray is one of the four shortest women playing in this game, with many of the players topping the 6ft mark, with the tallest being Australia’s Elizabeth Cambage who stands 6ft 9in.
The Australians are one of the strongest women’s basketball teams in these Games, having won the silver medal in the last three Olympics.
As of this writing China is leading the overall Olympic medal count with 6; Italy and the USA follow with 5; Brazil, Republic of Korea and Japan have 3, and Australia, Kazakhstan, Russian Federation, Colombia, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Belgium, Hungary, Norway, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Serbia, and Uzbekistan have all claimed one Olympic medal.
The first big upset of these Games occurred when American Michael Phelps was knocked out of the medals in the 400-meter individual medley, while the Italian team dominated the women’s Individual Foil in the fencing portion, claiming all three medals.
The opening ceremony saw a record-setting 40.7 million watching NBC’s coverage in the US, making it the most-watched opening ceremony of any summer or winter Olympics. Despite selling more than $1 billion worth of advertising for the London Olympics, NBC Universal has said it expects to lose money on the games.
Olympic coverage is being shown in Bermuda on CableVision’s Channel 514 and VSB’s channel 11.
Update 6.30pm: The game is underway, Australia is up 11 – 7.
Update 8.40pm: The game finished, with Australia winning 74 – 58. Wade-Fray did not play due to injury.
