‘Renewal’ Community Event This Evening

July 2, 2012

A variety of community groups, including clubs, churches and others, are coming together for a Community Gathering at the First Church of God on North Shore, from 6.30 – 8 pm this evening [July 2].

A spokesperson for the group said, “On July 2, 1959 after years of campaigning and two weeks of the genius, grassroots effort constituting the Theatre Boycott, formal barriers of race were removed in Bermuda. That success was due the committed collaboration of numerous ordinary people, notably members of the Progressive Group. That date marked the beginning of a renewal of our island’s society, transforming it in fundamental ways that have benefited us all.

“However, we all recognize that we are currently experiencing some real challenges to the fabric of our society, as manifested this past Saturday. In the face of violence, ironically, new barriers have emerged for too many of our young people. In light of this a variety of community groups, including clubs, churches and others, are coming together in a collaboration for a Community Gathering at the First Church of God on North Shore, on the theme Renewal, from 6.30 – 8 pm on Monday, July 2nd.

“The incident at the barbershop was extraordinary and would have stirred up diverse feelings in our island. However, this event is geared to move us beyond the impulse to be reactive and looks to renew the ‘ties that bind us’ as a community. In affirming our common humanity as a society the Gathering is based on the premise that each of us in this diverse island community, can be a part of the solution and have something to contribute to the goal of renewal.

“The First Church of God led by Bishop Vernon Lambe have eagerly agreed to host this event because of that congregations track-record of outreach in this particular part of the island and their iconic presence in the wider Christian community. However, let it be clear that the invitation for this Gathering goes out to all, regardless of association with any Faith.

“The format of the event is geared to move us beyond ‘speech-making’ so that residents; from all sectors of our island can come together and share personal stories of renewal in their own lives. We have already had commitments from personalities –senior political leaders – who will join in sharing stories of fathers renewing connections with sons and other examples of family renewal.

“With that context we will explore ideas on how we can strengthen established links in our communities and build new ones in an effort to renew our neighbourhoods and the wider society.”
