Bermuda Hospitals Board Awards 13 Scholarships

August 7, 2012

Bermuda Hospitals Board [BHB] has awarded $120,000 in scholarships for this fiscal year [and paid over time periods from one to three years] to 13 students studying in fields that are projected to be in demand by the hospitals. These include Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Sonography/Radiology, Medical Technology and Pharmacy.

In addition, GlaxoSmithKline [GSK], a Bermuda-based subsidiary of GlaxoSmithKline plc, has increased their scholarship support by funding an annual award of $30,000, paid out over a two-year period. This year’s recipient of the GSK scholarship is Kelly Savery, who is studying Psychology.

The scholarship winners have all demonstrated a strong commitment to service in the community and the hospitals, as well as maintaining a solid academic performance.

Lynae Joseph, BHB Career Development Coordinator says: “We are very proud to provide scholarships to this year’s winners and congratulate them for their important contribution to our community. BHB is committed to supporting Bermudian students who choose careers in healthcare.

“We are competing in a global market with a shortage of medical professionals and we recognize the value these young people are bringing to Bermuda by becoming healthcare workers.”

Venetta Symonds, BHB CEO, says: “These scholarship recipients will one day join our team as fully qualified healthcare workers. We wish them well as they take the next step towards exciting and rewarding professions. I would also like to pay tribute to GlaxoSmithKline for supporting our students and offering $30,000 to one of our scholarship winners.”

Wendall Brown, BHB Chairman adds: “We set aside a sizeable portion of money for the scholarship programme as the importance of attracting Bermudians into healthcare is critical to the long term wellbeing of the hospitals and its ability to deliver sustained excellent quality care in the years to come.
