It’s safer to be walking along the track at Daytona in February than it is on Bermuda’s roads.
FOR REAL! Not only do we have many drivers/riders under the influence we also have private & commercial vehicles that are too big for our roads, people driving/riding like maniacs, people eating, texting, messing with their radio & doing all sorts of other things while driving/riding instead of focusing on the main task at hand.
To whom it may concern if you cannot go around a corner on or in your vehicle without going over the middle line there are one or all of three things you need to do. Slow down when riding/driving, get riding/driving lessons and/or get a smaller vehicle.
We need to have the law back in place that doesn’t allow vehicles of a certain size on our roads without being chopped down to size. I guess this won’t happen since we have too many government ministers & civilians who like their hummers, massive pickup trucks, stretched cars & oversized suvs. The ironic thing is that all these huge vehicles started arriving in Bermuda at the same time we had a premier who promised to work on the reduction traffic congestion on island. Then again this is the same premier who promised to tackle indigent medical care, environmental concerns, over development, waste disposal & race relations so I guess it shouldn’t come as a big surprise that traffic congestion was made worse under his governing since he made all other topics worse as well.
You know that the constant attacks against people that own CR-Vs is getting old! Yes, I’m one of them. I upgraded many years ago from my old G-class as it was difficult to get multiple infant seats in place with my young family.
This article is about DUIs which are life-threatening and are committed irregardless of the size vehicle a person drives.
If you want to comment on people straying over the lines, note that it happens with the smaller classes as well. In fact, we could safely have even larger cars here, like the Channel Islands, whose roads resemble St. Geoge’s, and size is not an issue there.
I fully expect you to make this a political issue as well and blame someone. If you choose to go down that route, remember that a certain group of politicians bloody well let the darn infernal machines here back in the ’50s.
Sad
Thank God for the women not being seriously injured! I hope she makes a quick recovery! And Thank you to the officer(s) that went after this heartless young man and captured him!
Another delinquent native on the bottle. Hope the lady recovers well.
Too many DUIs are happening on the roads of Bermuda. People if you want to drink stay home or ABCD – Always use BUS, CAR, or DESIGNATED DRIVER. What is it going to take for people to wake up. We have already had deaths, injuries. I guess everyone on this island that likes to drink has to DIE and then the problem would be eradicated.
I wish complete healing for the lady.
What are you on about! There are just as many expats who DUI as natives. All someone has to do is stand SOBER on front street after 3am on a weekend to see how apparent this is.
Recently, the majority of impaired drivers seem to be in their 20′s.
This sends a signal of a more serious problem of substance abuse within the community and especially with young people.
The laws need to be amended to include jail time served for a first offence and your driving license suspended for life, as drunk drivers are normally repeat offenders.
I agree with you to a point @Over the Limit. All scientific literature determines that the root cause of drug abuse must be determined before successful treatment/behavior change can occur. Penalizing an abuser or addict doesn’t curb the behavior since typically the drug (alchohol, weed, etc) is used to self medicate. Harsher laws without a comprehensive treatment and prevention program will just cause our jails to be crowded. Bermuda has a culture of drinking and for every person caught I’m sure there are dozens that are not. We need a more visible driving under the influence campaign that is non-stop with resources to curb the behavior.
I agree that addicts shouldn’t be penalized for being addicts but penalizing someone for DUI is not the same. That’s like saying an addict who burglarizes someone shouldn’t be penalized because of their addiction. Not all addicts steal just as not all addicts DUI & some who are not addicts do so its the act that is dangerous & a harsh penalty should be handed out for the action nothing to do with a penalty for addiction.
Roadside testing is not legal here like the rest of the civilized world. Time to change all that, don’t ya think?
Drunk Bastids can’t drive when they are sober, what makes them think they can drive whilst impared…..
I say this time and time again. Raise the drinking age. Even though this guy is 24, at least we wouldn’t be giving these kids a head start. The habit starts at 18 and spills over into the 20′s. Raise it to 21 and ease this culture of drinking.
@Brosive Unfortunately this habit starts before 18. When you go into a club today how many “underage” kids do you see, I have a younger brother and I see many of his age group in the clubs. By raising the drinking age to 21 it will just cause more problems. Going into college in the USA 3 years ago I noticed so many underage people binge drinking and drinking more dangerously. Also by the time I went to college because I had been drinking before and as it was legal in my country, I did not find myself too concerned with drinking to get drunk like they do in the states. You raise the drinking age, you increase the numbers in underage drinking, and you increase the dangers associated with underage drinking (i.e. binge drinking, drinking more frequently at higher levels than you would if you were allowed to drink etc..)
I hate to break this to you but kids start drinking here as early as 13 & some even sneak it into schools in soda or juice containers daily. Upping the drinking age is not a solution & Americas 21 years law is a good example of that since the number alcoholics tops that of Canada & other countries with a lower drinking age.
The problem with our drinking culture is the same as America’s & other countries with a high level of alcoholism alcohol is too accessible. This happens when every tom, dick & harry store is allowed a liquor license & here we have gone overboard with this to the point where someone can even buy alcohol in the pharmacy. The problem gets even worse when cashiers & bar tenders allow anyone with a bit of peach fuzz on their face or early developed body purchase alcohol without asking for an ID. The countries that have lower levels of alcoholics are either the countries that have strict alcoholism laws like being beaten for being an alcoholic or countries that have a very strict limit to who can sell alcohol. Id rather the later as the first type of country has an inhumane approach.
Roslyn. I believe it is “Always use Bus, CAB, or Designated driver”. You said CAR, which of course is what he was using.
Hope the lady is OK and that this guy gets the book thrown at him.
Where is the road side breath testing and sobriety check points that CADA and the police have been asking for, for YEARS!! its astonishing that we can rush through all kinds of pieces of legislation but a simple piece that allows the police to use a road side breathalizer can take so long, guess it doesn’t suit some peoples political agendas.
even with a police check point, whats the 1st thing locals do when the police setup check points? send a mass broadcast to everyone telling them the police are up the road take another route. we are our own worst enemies, we encourage the behavior we are now seeing on the roads. we have fun buying rounds of drinks for friends and laugh the next day at how much of a good time we all had, but then we chastise the next person who gets caught drunk driving, calling them idiots when a large portion of us do the same thing every week but dont get caught or in an accident…go figure
Can argue with that.
That bie needs licks with stinging nettles.
But seriously this is the third *alleged* drunk driving accident in less than a month.
The 2nd involving a pedestrian. Something needs to be done.
Just glad 2 of the 3 haven’t been fatalities.
who needs guns and knives when we have alchohol available in the store.. it comes in a bottle and because its man made and not grown out of the earth,, its perfectly good to consume,, hey who cares if you kill someone on your way home,, beat your spouse when you do arrive home, its okay,,, its legal
@Union Member..point well taken. And I certainly agree with treatment and prevention.
But it seems as if these methods very rarely work as the offender continues to relapse because of their environment. How many times have we seen substance abusers complete rehab and then sucuumb to the slightest bit of pressure and begin self medicating again?
At most times, these people have very deep seated issues, which normally stem from their childhood or other more serious mental illnesses and low self esteem.
This happens all the time, mornings and afternoons. Don’t try crossing the street by Shelly Bay Beach ppl play like they don’t see you when you are already on the crossing. eg, Brown Kia Sportage 29505 or just 2 days ago GP7 and the countless others!!!!
When the day finally comes that we have the technology to breathalyse for everything I wouldn’t assume that every accident is caused by a drunk driver or that only drunk drivers are having these accidents.
If I was a betting man , I’d wager that at any given time of the day there’s as many or more people driving under the influence of drugs than alcohol.
close the bars at 11 !!! there will be a reduction in accidents and DUIs !!!!
Simply just ban alcohol all together, it’s the worst drug ever.
HERE WE GO AGAIN. GREY PEUGEOT **** THANKS FOR ALMOST TAKING ME OUT ON THE CROSSWALK!!!! SLOW DOWN BERMUDA!!!!!
I’m very upset about this incident. I urge the police to charge him with every conceivable law possible. Attempted manslaughter, grievous bodily harm, aggravated assault, drunk driving etc…
While the victim may be recovering…she may have to live with facial, body, and psychological scars for the rest of her life.
