Another Team Drops Out Of Island Games

September 12, 2012

Some teams from the Western Isles will not travel to the Island Games in Bermuda next year, their local newspaper the Stornoway Gazette reports.

“The WIIGA Executive Committee met recently to discuss which teams will be representing the Association at the NatWest Island Games – Bermuda 2013,” the report said.”

“All Team Managers have been informed that Athletics, Swimming and Cycling are being asked to send teams to the games. All other teams, which include men’s and women’s football, shooting, golf and sailing, will continue to develop their squads in the build up to Jersey 2015.

“Taking a team to Bermuda was always going to be challenging both financially and logistically and this selection has been made to allow WIIGA to make travelling to the Games as affordable as possible to all participants.”

The 2013 Island Games has seen a steady trickle of European-based teams withdraw some of their athletes citing the expense; Jersey’s volleyball, football and basketball teams; and the football teams from the Isle of Man and Guernsey have all announced they will not compete in Bermuda due to the expense of getting here.
