BTC Planning To Deliver 25MB Download Speed
The Bermuda Telephone Company [BTC] announced that it received approval from its Board of Directors to invest in an infrastructure upgrade that will deliver “superior broadband access” throughout the island.
BTC CEO Eric Dobson announced that “by end of the first quarter of 2013,40% of the island’s homes will have access to download speeds of 25 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 4Mbps, significantly greater than those currently available.”
These speeds will be delivered via a combination of fiber and advanced broadband technologies, and BTC said it “only the first step in the company’s broadband evolution plan for the island.”
BTC plans to introduce high speed access services for both residential and small business customers, which was developed as a result of noted changes in customer demand with higher upload speeds are now a real consideration for many.
Eric Dobson, CEO of BTC said, “We will aggressively expand and improve upon the quality and capabilities of our local infrastructure. We will do so through new investments and by leveraging existing fiber networks.”
There will also be a suite of small business products launched that BTC said is capable of meeting the demands of today’s small businesses. These SOHO [small office home office] offerings will include several options, with the premium tier allowing download speeds of 15Mbps with upload speeds of up to 10Mbps.
Lloyd Fray, CEO of KeyTech said, “This move is the logical next step in the group’s development of Bermuda’s local infrastructure, and will facilitate the delivery of next generation services to both residential customers and small business owners.”

Woot, about time. Ferry Reach first please Just kidding, good to see something positive for Bermuda.
Great news. How much?
This is great but how much will it cost a month $500 lol
Well it already costs an arm and a leg so throw in your left nut and you should be good.
Great news.
Thats great to hear…. but we still need to work out the quality of service issues. It makes no differance how fast your local loop is if your offshore latency is deplorable. We need a quality of service standard and an agreement to handle it. Simply bursting to 25 meg and falling back just doesn’t cut it. How many people are already paying for a 10 meg service, but your only getting about 6 and it is considered acceptable in certain areas due to distance limitations.
Good, but how much are they gonna burn us for it. What we pay now is criminal and is ridiculously the highest in the world. They should be regulated.
Its about ten years late..
Ya damn skippy it is late. Computers and broadband are about to make a quantum leap and BTC knows it will need to offer the minimum to keeps everyone happy but don’t be fooled they will milk this for all its worth meanwhile the world will be in 60MB/sec range as per normal. Stop the nonsense and let Link Bermuda into the arena. I want choice dammit!
Glad that Bermuda is finally getting a bit of an upgrade. I wonder what the actual speed test results will be after implementation. Hopefully, they just make this the new top tier price point for everyone and bump everyone up like they normally do. However, I doubt that will happen given that this is such a large leap from the current speeds.
Yea 25MB, I pay for a 10MB and cant break the 7mb barrier and that is during non peak times. Peak times I cant break 4MB, yet when I call to get it fixed oh its transact, and transact says oh its BTC. maybe with a 25MB plan I may see the 10MB I was originally hoping for.
This would never be acceptable back in the states.
BTC need to be held accountable for their inferior broadband infrastructure. I pay for 6MB and get 4MB and that is for a business outside of Hamilton. I can’t switch to cable because it is a business. And even if I did Cablevision and TBI don’t play well together. So I am left with a compromise, I hope their upgrade eliminates the false speed claims and provide some real speed and quality of service.

Thank you for reaching out. I will contact you to see if you can resolve this issue.
I’m glad progress is being made, but Bermuda’s high end speed is the rest of the planet’s entry-level speed. :/
For the fair price of… wait for it… your first-born son or daughter you get to pay two providers for one unreliable service.
However, we can’t move away from paying to company’s each month to provide one product because they need eachother so there’s always someone else to blame.
Please offer more than high speed Internet…think outside the “biggest” box ….Outside Bermuda and invest in a infrastructure that even create more jobs, different jobs, better jobs, …..
Thanks love the thinking, but make it bigger … 15 years plus worthy…
LOL !!!
That was very funny.
..and true.
I am very happy that we are at least playing catch up. Can’t wait.
Well btc couldn’t get a 4mb dsl to be stable at my place, so I doubt i’ll ever see 25… It would be nice to see the wireless internet providers come to the wicket as well.. Although my 4mb northrock does give 3.75 most days.
Heck, I pay for 4mb and never seen 2mb and now your talking 25mb…Year Right BTC…

Yeah thats all well and good but
1- How much is this is going to cost.. Internet is already overpriced; and
2 – How about you figure out how we can pay just ONE company for internet access instead of having to overpay two different companies for sub-par service.
BTC just trying to stay with the competition with Logic and Northrock who announced a while back that they were approved and should have available this fall an internet tier of 15MB and 25MB.
Right now I pay 119.95 to Northrock and then 35 bucks to Cablevision for only 8MB (3/4 of that I may receive – usually only half or less during evenings). One company to handle everything here like comcast is in the US would be nice but that realistically will never happen here!
That’s 155 bucks already a month for a service that 50% reliable if that. With cablevision needing a new type of modem for the 15/25MB jump, how much are they going to ask us to pay – 70 bucks?
How much are the ISPs going to charge – 220 bucks?
The commission says there are stipulations where the ISPs must guarantee that consumers receive 85% of the speed they pay for in these new purposed tiers.
Yeah right – ‘guarantees’ are just like ‘government promises’…
