Senator Fahy Responds To Recent Tech News
On hearing the announcement of LinkBermuda’s plans to build an island-wide fiber-optic network, Shadow Minister for Environment, Planning & Housing Michael Fahy said, “Competition is healthy, but competition must benefit Bermudians in both the short term and the long term.”
Senator Fahy also said that Government’s announcement of its plans to reform the telecommunications regulations industry by introducing ICOLs [Integrated Communications Operating Licences] next March is “good news”.
“We in the One Bermuda Alliance read the announcement of LinkBermuda’s plans to build an Island-wide fiber-optic network here with great interest,” said Senator Fahy.
“Government announced at the same time that as part of its plans to reform the telecommunications regulations industry, it will introduce ICOLs [Integrated Communications Operating Licences] next March.
“This is good news. Bermudians pay well above the odds in the technology sector as it is, and ICOLs will, we hope, help bring prices down.
“As a party, we believe that competition is healthy, but competition must benefit Bermudians in both the short term and the long term. We have to make sure that the consumer benefits, but also that local companies, which have put so much work into building the existing infrastructure, are given a fair deal.
“We are pleased when any company says they will be providing jobs for Bermudians. The key here is to make sure this does, in fact, happen.”

Key Tech got their backing and Link Bermuda got theirs. All I can say is that this is so long overdue it really is NOT funny. We have milked the current infrastructure beyond the limit. NO MORE incremental updates. i.e from 512kb to 2mb then to the current 4mb. It is vexing to say the least, not to mention when I pay for 4mb and would be getting less than 2mb. Throttling up and throttling down like a slow 50c.c going over Mcgalls Hill on reserves. Da Fugg. Bring IT!
During peak times like after 5pm when everyone has come home from work. They trim the band width down on people who are not streaming video etc, because they (IP) cannot handle the volume of data. That’s a fact.
I’m not surprised, old money raping the company for years whilst stifling competition. Its about time some fresh minds have introduced new technology to the market. I may not like Digicel tactics, but they are driving the price down to a reasonable level. TBI done likewise back in 1996 and Link may (fingers crossed) have a similar impact on fixed line services. I only wish that government would keep up with the innovators
Good response from Mr. Fahy – no political rethoric! This improvement is in everyone’s best interest.
This is great, but I heard last night their partner will be BELCO in this estimated $56 – 100millon fibre project, isnt it a little strange that BELCO’s parent company is buying up companies and forming partnerships all over the place but claims not to have enough money to re invest in their own plant and needs you and I to pay one of the highest power costs on the planet which is riddled with fake surcharges, maybe if they spent less on their shopping spree and more on their core business Bermudains could see a reduction in costs.
