Minister: ‘Police Are On The Right Track’

October 8, 2012

The Ministry of National Security today released the final results of a Bermuda Omnibus Survey conducted in September 2012 for the Bermuda Police Service.

“Satisfaction levels with the work of the Bermuda Police Service remain high and continue to trend upwards…… the people of Bermuda know that the Police are working hard and have honestly shared their views as a part of this survey” said Minister Wayne Perinchief.

The Bermuda Police Satisfaction Index [BPSI] was created in 2009 to assist in tracking the effectiveness of future service improvements implemented by the Police. The BPSI captures the level of satisfaction reported by residents on aspects of the service including:

  • Overall performance of the Bermuda Police Service;
  • Fair and equitable treatment for all citizens;
  • Ability to solve crimes in a timely manner;
  • Prioritising response to emergency calls based on the seriousness of crime;
  • Investigation of serious crimes;
  • Investigation of general crime; and
  • Investigation of anti-social behaviour.

Satisfaction with Bermuda Police [1st number is June 2012, 2nd is September 2012]

  • Satisfaction with police service: 62% – 63%
  • Fair and equitable treatment for all citizens regardless of race, income or age: 55% - 58%
  • Ability to solve crimes in a timely manner: 49% - 42%
  • Prioritizing response to emergency calls based on seriousness of crime: 57% - 59%
  • Investigation of serious crimes including firearms, gang violence, street drug dealing or drug importation: 65% - 56%
  • Investigation of general crime including theft, burglary, or drug trafficking: 56% - 50%
  • Investigation of anti-social behavior including loitering, boisterous argument with profanity and alcohol and/or substance abuse or fighting in public streets and parks: 48% - 53%

Minister Perinchief concluded: “There is always room for improvement and in discussing these results with the Commissioner, I am satisfied that he with his senior command remain focused on the job at hand and the need to continue the trend of increasing public confidence through strong enforcement and sound investigations.

“This Government will continue to support the Police and commend the public who have risen to the challenge of playing an effective part in crime prevention and investigation. These results confirm that the Police are on the right track.”

    You have got to be kidding. Sigthings of Cops on the streets are even less common than those of an honest politician! We have complete chaos on our roads and despite constant complaints from the public over many years, there has been zero improvement. The performance of the BPS in this regard is tantamount to criminal dereliction of duty.

  3. Real Talk says:

    You can’t be serious our police department is a joke. No one repects the popo in uniform any more, they are just out there. It’s only when the G unit popo show up that makes the bad guys think twice, and by then the crime has already been done. Someone asked me the other day if anything happened and I needed the popo would I call then “HELL NO” for what. Our justice system don’t work…….

    [ POLICE ARE ON THE RIGHT TRACK ! ha ha ha ha ha ha
    As far as many Bermudians are concerned the Bermuda Police Service
    lacks any real tactic or strategy at all.
    For the most part a lot of there style dates back in the 60′s and 70′S.
    Its so simple to stop a person for a failed back light and spend 30 mins
    checking out there details while at the same time so much crime is going on.– [ EASY PREY ]
    Many antisocial hangouts exist are dangerously active because there is no Police around — they are busy Traffic hunting.

      So according you, all police do is traffic stuff and according to ‘road rage’ police don’t do any traffic enforcement cos he/she never sees them.

      Yet according to latest release, 34 people were arrested this weekend alone, including 7 for DUI.

      Obviously, there’s room for improvement, there always is. UK has cops getting shot, murders all over the shop, US is awash with gangs, guns and drugs…..so the reality is that nowhere is a panacea of crime free living.

      I guess it’s just cool to be disparaging of the police.

        I travel often between Hamilton and St. George’s. Sometimes bike, car, or bus. The other day there was a huge police presence catching speeders at the west end of McGall’s Hill. Little or none on North Shore. And the guy(s) who do wheelies near Devil’s Hole continue. Also the guys who play “chicken” with bus operators.

        Want to fill a quota and stop people who (usually) don’t talk back, catch McGall’s Hill. Get the guys who travel fast and recklessly? Sit somewhere else. (No I wasn’t stopped… just observed…. )

    f**king kidding right?
    no one respects the police. I don’t know who they polled to come up with this crap..we need to bring back community policing and give the police mannerism lessons because their approach sucks !!!

    • Bda Onion Girl says:

      Yes, community policing, so they know their parish people and can tell if someone is having a bad day and venting, or a perpetual menace to neighbours and all he/she encounters. They would then also know if someone has cleaned up their act, is trying to be responsible and encourage the better behaviour.

      Some police have an attitude, perhaps even can’t understand the assortment of English dialects spoken here. I know for certain I have to ask some to repeat what they’re saying. That being said, there are some fantastic, dedicated officers, it can’t be easy working on the force.

  6. Y-Gurl says:

    RIGHT TRACK..this from a Minister with his head and ideas stuck in the 1960′s somewhere, come on the Police in bermuda couldnt solve a whodunnit if the guilty party was sitting on the steps of the $100million Poice Station! gun crime in Bermuda could have been stamped out the second week it started but for a weak police service with weak leadership, *some officers* are arrogant, rude and simply un informed on how to deal with law abiding people. Unfortunately the Police get little or no respect in Bermuda also because the rules dont seem to apply to them. The minister hasnt got a clue and his comments at any time in no way reflect the real picture in the real world.

  7. Opressed says:

    Obviously The Minister lives somewhere outside of Bermuda. Far, far outside.

  8. 16s32e says:

    Thank you Omnibus and the people that hired them to do the survey on how well the police are doing. Another tool to use to pat everyone on the back and say how well we are all doing. Stop wasting the money on surveys that you know the answer to and put the money to good use like solving the outstanding murders and larger crimes that go unsolved here on the island. In a lighter note the BPS seems to be doing a better job at catching the criminals. Maybe it is the judicial system that needs updating to speed up the process. Keep up the good work for now.
