‘Rafael Could Become A Hurricane By Monday’

October 14, 2012

[Updated: The Bermuda Weather Service has issued a Tropical Storm Watch]

Tropical Storm Rafael could become a hurricane by Monday [Oct 15] and a Tropical storm or Hurricane Watch may be required for Bermuda later today, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center [NHC].

“Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph…85 km/h…with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours and Rafael could become a hurricane by Monday,” said the NHC.

“Interests in Bermuda should monitor the progress of Rafael. A Tropical storm or Hurricane Watch may be required for Bermuda later today.”

The Bermuda Weather Service forecaster Michelle Pitcher also said there may be a tropical storm watch issued this morning.

“Tonight a few showers are expected as Rafael begins to push a weak trough into our area from the south. Finally, looking at the infra-red satellite imagery, I expect plenty of clouds to remain in the area today and through tonight,” said Ms Pitcher.

“On the surface, widespread rain and showers and likely thunderstorms will be in the area as Rafael passes as a category 1 hurricane. The 12am advisory from the National Hurricane Center indicates that the closest point of approach will occur Tuesday afternoon with tropical storm force winds over the Island and 50 knot winds in the eastern marine area.”

The latest update from the NHC this morning said Rafael is about 890 miles [1435km] south of Bermuda, and moving north-north-west at 12mph.

Update 11.30am: The Bermuda Weather Service issued a Tropical Storm Watch at 11.30am.

Haven’t we had enough difficulties lately with the world wide recession? And now we are going to get another storm? If only the OBA had a plan or if PLP actually did something other than moan about race then this might not be happening. Piss poor Government.
