Bermuda’s men’s tennis team have been drawn against ninth-seeded Group II nation Mexico for the next round of the Davis Cup World Group II.

The International Tennis Federation held the draw yesterday [February 12], with Bermuda selected to host the event on September 18–19 or 19–20.

Daniel Phillips, Trey Mallory, Zachy Maguire and Wayne Montgomery, under the captaincy of Ricky Mallory Jr, defeated Georgia 3–2 in the play-offs in Cyprus last week.

Michael Wolfe, the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association president, said: “Following the official ITF draw held earlier today, I am pleased to confirm that Bermuda has been selected to host Mexico for the Davis Cup World Group II tie this coming September.

“To host a nation of Mexico’s calibre is a great honour and a true testament to the heights our programme has reached.

“This is a premier opportunity for Bermuda to display our tennis prowess and for our players to showcase their talent directly in front of their home fans.

“While we recognise the competition only gets tougher — facing a seeded nation with several players ranked in the world’s top 300 — this is a challenge we are fully prepared to rise to.

“The work begins immediately to ensure we host an event that meets the highest international standards.

“For our tennis community, this is a ‘homecoming’ like no other. It provides vital inspiration for our junior players, who will see world-class tennis on their home soil and see firsthand that a pathway to the global stage exists right here in Bermuda.

“It is a moment of immense national pride, allowing the entire island to rally behind ‘the Pink and Blue’ in person. Furthermore, it brings significant global visibility, once again showcasing Bermuda as a premier destination for international sporting events.

“We look forward to welcoming Mexico to our shores and seeing our community out in full force in the stands this September.

“The BLTA will begin mobilisation immediately to secure the necessary resources, facility requirements and community support required to host the Mexican delegation.

“We encourage the entire island to mark their calendars for September as we prepare to welcome world-class tennis to our shores.”
