Chamber: Throne Speech “Lacked Specifics”

November 2, 2012

Bermuda Chamber of Commence President Ronnie Viera said this morning’s [Nov 2] Throne Speech “lacked specifics on how Government plans to reduce the escalation of debt and service that which is outstanding”, in a brief response to the 2012 Throne Speech.

Mr Viera said, “The Chamber welcomes any improvement in fiscal management however the speech lacked specifics on how Government plans to reduce the escalation of debt and service that which is outstanding. It is aspirational, built on hope that things will improve without any major initiatives or the policy changes which are required to reverse the downward direction of the economy.

“While pleased with the announcement that Government will provide a form of residency for those investing in tourism zoned units, The Chamber questioned why the same consideration should not be offered to those purchasing any property at the very top end of the market.

“The Chamber was also concerned that no mention was made of efforts to stimulate investment in hotel properties by removing the red tape and immigration barriers currently stymieing progress.”

I don’t get it. Are you disagreeing with Ronnie Viera and believe that the throne speech did contain specifics on how Government plans to reduce the escalation of debt, or are you just here to shoot the messenger, ignore the issue, and then go bury your head in the sand.

      • Egar says:

The throne speech did contain specifics. What do you want to hear? You have to boost the economy, and the boost initiatives were there. How do you get out of debt, you have to make more money right! So you can pay it off. How many of you out there are in debt. And don’t blame the government, just have a plan to pay it off. Let hear yours.

    • Seriously….read the article…he is making an observation of facts…not criticizing anything at all. Don’t forget to drink the kool-aid tomorrow night!!

  2. What the Hell says:

What is this guy on about. I’m guessing OBA command told him to issue a statement and this is all he could come up with.

“The Chamber was also concerned that no mention was made of efforts to stimulate investment in hotel properties by removing the red tape and immigration barriers currently stymieing progress.”

Did this guy just really say that, after the government said its going to give residency to tourists investing in hotel properties.

He’s so partisan its a joke! Ronnie, you ain’t fooling nobody, we all see that stuff you write about PLP on facebook.

… we are entitled to our own opinions but not our own facts… Daniel Patrick Moynihan

Mr. Viera and Chamber Members, Please read page 4 of the Throne Speech. “The Tourism Development Act will replace the Hotels Concessions Act and include a broader range of concessions to tourism investors.”

Need I say more? The Chamber needs to be less partisan (or at least its spokesperson).

  4. Prayerful says:

I think that mybe Mr. Viera wrote his response before he read the throne speech.
