Digicel Sponsors 2012 Optimist Championships
Digicel Bermuda is the title sponsorship of the Digicel 2012 Bermuda Optimist Open and National Championships to take place at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club November 10th – 12th 2012.
The Bermuda Optimist Dinghy Association was founded in 1998 and now the national optimist championships are in their 15th year. This regatta showcases Bermuda’s young optimist dinghy competitors, as well as introduces them to overseas sailors as young as 7 years of age.
“Digicel Bermuda is committed to developing youth sailing on the island and what better way to demonstrate our commitment then to support a competition that fosters skill and maturity amongst young participants,” stated Digicel’s CEO Wayne Caines.
Digicel Sales Director, Shane McDonnell added, “We are pleased to have this opportunity to work alongside the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club in this endeavor. Organisers have worked diligently to put together an exciting race weekend for both participants and spectators.”
The Digicel 2012 Bermuda Optimist Open and National Championships currently has 70 entrants aged between 7 and 15 years. The race weekend will consist of up to 15 races with 5 races scheduled per day in Hamilton Harbour, Granaway Deep and the Great Sound.
“The Royal Bermuda Yacht Club is delighted to be the Organising Authority and host club for this year’s Optimist Open and National Championships and it is great to have Digicel on board,” said Royal Bermuda Yacht Club Director of Sailing, Tom Herbert-Evans.
“In addition to a jam packed weekend of sailing, the Club will also host a dinner for the sailors on Friday night, a BBQ on Sunday night and the prize giving scheduled to immediately follow sailing on Monday afternoon.”
The Digicel 2012 Bermuda Optimist National Championship scheduled for November 10th – 12th is open to the one-design Optimist Class, members of the Bermuda Optimist Dinghy Association and competitors born on or after January 1st 1997. The intended first warning signal is scheduled for 10:00 am Saturday, November 10th.

Dear Digicel,
Thanks for supporting this event, my son tried sailing at RBYC this summer after having no interest in basketball, football, rugby or tennis.
Hopefully more sponsors will start to support this sport and the dreams of younger sailors who’s development is often thwarted due to limited financial ability to continue.
Please no negative comments, just support our young sailors!!
